6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes in Maluku

JAKARTA, 21 February 2007 - A powerful earthquake rocked northern Maluku province yersterday evening, but there was no risk of a tsunami. Indonesia's meteorologiy agency (BMG) had earlier warned people on the island of Bacan to be watchful over changing sealevels. The earthquake with a magnitude 6.5 on th Richter scale was powerful enough to create a local tsunami.

The agency announced that the alert has since been cancelled, as there were no signs of a tsunami. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were known.
