    Software: TraceViewer
Submitted by Ronaldo Rodrigues Ferreira; posted on Monday, August 27, 2007
Current available tools targeting multiple chromatograms are deficient in their functionalities. In order to close the gap between free and full analysis support of multiple chromatograms software, we developed the TraceViewer. TraceViewer provides several functionalities needed by any biologist who wants to efficiently analyse his/her trace data.

    URL:
To download the setup program and/or the source code, access http://traceviewer.sourceforge.net.

If TraceViewer does not provide some functionality needed by you and your group, please send me an email. I will check out the possibility to freely implement it for you. Send an email to rrferreira [at] inf [dot] ufrgs [dot] br.

News.com: Judge says Unix copyrights belong to Novell
Submitted by J.W. Bizzaro; posted on Monday, August 13, 2007
Submitter An article by by John Markoff:

``In a decision that may finally settle one of the most bitter legal battles surrounding software widely used in corporate data centers, a federal district court judge in Utah ruled Friday afternoon that Novell, not the SCO Group, is the rightful owner of the copyrights covering the Unix operating system.

``In the 102-page ruling, the judge, Dale A. Kimball, also said Novell could force SCO to abandon its claims against IBM, which SCO had sued. Judge Kimball's decision in favor of Novell could almost entirely undermine SCO's 2003 lawsuit against IBM.

``The ruling could remove the cloud over open-source software like Linux, an operating system loosely modeled on the proprietary Unix. The unresolved ownership has been seen as a limiting factor in the willingness of computing managers for businesses large and small to adopt open-source software, which can be adapted freely by software developers and can be legally shared or modified by end users.''

Chromhome is a database of comparative genomics showing maps of chromosome homologies across species. These homologies have been identified by cross-species chromosome painting with chromosome specific DNA probes prepared by chromosome sorting or microdissection. The chromosome products are amplified by random- primed PCR and labeled with various fluorochromes. The fluorescent probes are hybridized to be fixed and the air dried on microscopic slides and examined under fluorescence microscopy. For technical details refer Rens et al (2006) Nature Protocols 1, 783- 790.

Chromhome is produced by Cambridge Resource Centre for Comparative Genomics, Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, UK (http://www.vet.cam.ac.uk/genomics).
