The Academy’s 4th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards were presented at a ceremony held in San Jose at Polly Esther’s on March 22, 2001.

Humorist Martin Lewis hosted the awards, and the presenters were Scott Campbell (Incognito Entertainment), Louis Castle (Westwood Studios), Mark De Simone (Rainbow Studios), Alex Garden (Relic Entertainment), Tony Goodman (Ensemble Studios), Lorne Lanning (Oddworld Inhabitants), Michael Limber (Angel Studios), Sid Meier (Firaxis Games), Dr. Ray Muzyka (Bioware), Gabe Newell (Valve Software), Ted Price (Insomniac Games), Tom Russo (Next Generation), Johnathan Slager (Kodiak Interactive), Chris Taylor (Gas Powered Games), Will Wright (Maxis), and Dr. Greg Zechuk (Bioware).

Diablo II, developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, won three awards, including overall Game of the Year and PC Game of the Year.  SSX, developed and published by Electronic Arts, won five awards, including Console Game of the Year.

The Academy presented Interactive Achievement Awards in 27 craft, console, computer and online categories. The Academy also inducted John Carmack, founder of id Software, into the Academy's Hall of Fame. In keeping with Academy tradition, Hironobu Sakaguchi, last year's Hall of Fame inductee and creator of the Final Fantasy series, returned to make the presentation.
