1951-1960: OTHER MILESTONES OF THIS TIME PERIOD

1951

  • Henry "Hank" Ketchum creates the "Dennis the Menace" cartoon strip. Ketchum is a 1938 graduate of Queen Anne High School in Seattle.
  • DuPont established.

1952

  • President Harry Truman gives a speech at the Tacoma Armory that is nationally broadcast on radio.

1955

  • Boeing begins testing the Dash 80-which later becomes the Boeing 707.

1956

  • Jack Kerouac works a summer as a fire lookout on Desolation Peak in the North Cascades.
  • President Eisenhower speaks at University of Puget Sound.

1957

  • The city of Fife is incorporated (January 11).
  • Elvis Presley performs at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl for 6,000 fans (September 1).

1958

  • The Villa Plaza Shopping Center opens in Lakewood.

1959

  • Rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper are killed in a plane crash - "the day the music died" - (February 3).
  • The Washington state legislature approves funds for the Seattle's World Fair.
  • County-City Building is dedicated (April 10).

1960

  • University of Washington wins its first Rose Bowl by defeating Wisconsin 44-8.
  • Cheney Stadium opens.
