    Mohammad Yunos QANUNI
    An ethnic Tajik and former mujahedin, Qanuni emerged as a major political force with his second-place finish in the presidential vote. He now heads the "loyal opposition" in the form of a 12-party coalition called the National Reconciliation Front (Jabha-ye Tafahom-e Melli).

    Mohammad MOHAQEQ
    Mohaqeq finished third in last year's presidential balloting. His Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan is a member of Qanuni-led coalition and, as such, is expected to help form a powerful bloc in the National Assembly.
