REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) - Top Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu (SOO) is in custody after turning himself in on a 15-year-old grand theft charge.
Hsu was handcuffed and taken away after appearing in a Redwood City court this morning.
He's being held on $2 million bail. The judge in the case scheduled a hearing for next Wednesday, when he will consider reducing bail to $1 million.
Hsu made his court appearance this morning after media reports that he had skipped his sentencing on a 1991 grand theft charge.
Over the years he had become a top donor to numerous Democratic candidates, including presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama
Clinton said earlier this week that she would give to charity the $23,000 in donations she has received from Hsu.
Other Democrats have also begun distancing themselves from Hsu, whose legal encounters and links to other Democratic donors have drawn public scrutiny in the past two days.
