The search is over! Kim Jagtiani is Daily Planet's new co-host. Jagtiani joins veteran science journalist Jay Ingram, when the new season begins on Tues., Sept. 4. Viewers will remember Jagtinai as the guest co-host from the "Daily Planet Goes to India" theme week that aired in Spring, 2007. Raised in Canada and Indian by origin, Jagtiani was crowned Miss India Canada in 1999 and has been a popular television host in Mumbai for the last seven years. As "Daily Planet" gets set to launch its 13th season with Jagtiani, how fitting that the first week back will be dedicated to the science and technology behind getting things off the ground! Taking the "launch" theme literally, "Daily Planet" explores the science of jumping out of planes, swimming into the world's deepest sinkhole, as well as following backyard inventors who are building rockets for one of the world's biggest rocket contests.
Born in Mumbai and raised in Oshawa, Ontario, Jagtiani's career in television began after she won the 1999 Miss India Canada pageant. In 2000, she moved back to Mumbai where she worked as a presenter for Channel V, India's music channel. In addition to working for Channel V, Jagtiani has also worked as a writer and presenter for ESPN Asia, has starred in a number of Indian films and plays as well as having modeled for Seventeen and Cosmopolitan magazines. She brings her infectious personality and a keen interest in science and nature to her new role as co-host of "Daily Planet."
Returning home to Canada and once again reunited with Ingram, the new team is counting down to the launch of the new season. Together, Ingram and Jagtiani will usher in Discovery Channel's new fall season, beginning Sept. 4. Ingram has been the host of "Daily Planet" for the last 12 seasons. The author of eight books, three of which have won Canadian Science Writers' Awards, Ingram holds a Masters Degree in microbiology and three honorary doctorate degrees.
"Last spring viewers reacted quickly and unanimously to Kim during 'Daily Planet's' special theme week in India. They fell in love with her," said Paul Lewis, President and General Manager of Discovery Channel. "She's engaging and smart; funny and thoughtful. But most importantly she is intensely curious. These qualities are highly valued by our audience and vitally important to the show. We are very lucky to have found Kim half a world away and flattered that she is leaving a successful career in India to join us."
"I had such a blast co-hosting 'Daily Planet Goes To India' that I decided to stay!!" said Jagtiani. "I'm really looking forward to the year ahead, joining Discovery is a dream come true and I couldn't be happier. The bonus? I now get to trouble Jay Ingram and get paid for it!"
"It was great fun working with Kim in India and now we have a whole new season of 'Daily Planet' to work on," said Ingram. "This year we're exploring everything from here to Mars - and beyond - and we're looking forward to taking our viewers along for the ride."
