Route 40's traverse of California commences in the alpine conditions of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, descends to the central valley, crosses the coastal ranges and terminates in San Francisco. The stamp shown on the right made me smile. Of all of the USPS' "Greetings from..." stamps, the one for California is the only one that actually shows a portion of Route 40 roadway -- the Bay Bridge. Some people will think the bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge, but the placement of the city in the background as well as the bridge's lower deck all point to the Bay Bridge. Check back later! The California section of the Scrapbook is still being built. |

Commercial Buildings. The view above looks to the northwest and features the old fire house in the distance on the left as well as the California Hotel in the nearground. The photograph below shows Lincoln Way and Maple Street.

Firehouse and Commercial Buildings. This is one of my favorite HABS photos! This photo, which uses the firehouse as its focal point, shows a variety of automotive services catering to motorists. In this one view, three brands of tire, two brands of motor oil and and one brand of battery are advertised. The view is to the southwest and looks towards the old Lincoln Highway and Route 40. |

Castro-Alvarado Adobe, 2748 San Pablo Avenue. It's not very likely that you'll find cattle grazing in the yards of homes along San Pablo Avenue. This home, actually located between Piñole and Hercules. |
