Lal Masjid operation will help Pak-US alliance: Hunt

LAHORE: United States Lahore Consulate Principal Officer Bryan D Hunt told Daily Times on Wednesday that the Lal Masjid operation against Islamic militants would bring the US and Pakistan closer and strengthen their “war on terror” alliance. “We recognise the importance of the operation against the Lal Masjid clerics and we appreciate Pakistan’s decision to storm the Lal Masjid compound,” he said. “The militants were given many warnings but instead of surrendering they decided to fight and challenge the writ of government.” He said that a limited number of extremists in Jamia Hafsa had been trying to challenge the writ of the state and instigate society against government. Hunt regretted the deaths of security personnel in the operation. They sacrificed their lives to maintain the writ of the state, he said. The US fully supports Pakistan in the “war on terror” and considers Pakistan their “closest ally in South Asia,” he added. Hunt shared these views with Daily Times while visiting restoration work at the Lahore Fort Alamgiri Gate, being undertaken with support from the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. abdul manan
