Saks Off 5th to leave Fairlane Town Center
Taubman plans big new restaurant wing at Dearborn mall

Saks Off 5th will exit Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn by the end of the year to make room for a new P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and two other restaurants.

The mall’s owner, Taubman Centers Inc. of Bloomfield Hills, said the new restaurant wing should open in fall 2008. The Saks Off Fifth store will be demolished early next year and then construction will begin on the new 25,000-square-foot dining and entertainment wing.

"By clustering the new restaurants, we are creating a destination that will function much like another anchor for the center," said Catherine O’Malley, general manager of Fairlane Town Center.

The mall is a favorite lunch spot for nearby Ford Motor Co. workers, hotel guests, office workers and shoppers.

Fairlane's new wing will feature P.F. Chang's China Bistro along with two other casual-dining restaurants served by such amenities as a dedicated valet entrance, pedestrian plaza and outdoor seating area.

The mall also lost anchor Lord & Taylor, which closed in 2005. Birmingham-based retail consultant Ed Nakfoor said that the Fairlane location “has never been a winner for Saks.”

Saks operates a full-line store at Somerset Collection in Troy and its discount store at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills.
