LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - While people affected by this week's floods wait for government aid, local residents are helping out at home.
A 12-hour fundraiser in La Crosse yesterday raised more than $300,000.
Cheryl Hancock of the American Red Cross says the donations are overwhelming. She says the money will be used for food, blankets, disaster relief and cleanup.
The funds will assist flood victims in Crawford, La Crosse, Richland and Vernon counties, as well as in six counties in Minnesota.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been evaluating flood damage. Wisconsin Emergency Management has said 12 counties have reported $48 million in flood damage from this week's rains.
