November 25 1994

In a significant development for the Victorian aviation industry, a regional airline has announced that it will operate a direct service to Sydney from Avalon airport.

The Minister for Industry and Employment, Mr Gude, welcomed the announcement by Hazelton Airlines.

The first regional service to fly from Avalon, Hazelton will start twice daily flights to Sydney to February operating a 36 seat SAAB 340 aircraft.

The airline will establish an airport office and will recruit staff from the Geelong region.

The service has been introduced to meet the expanding business and tourist travel requirements of Geelong and the western region of Victoria, Mr Gude said.

The Victorian Government has given strong support to efforts by Aerospace Technologies of Australia (ASTA) to develop opportunities for Avalon to become a major commercial airport.

I am confident that the service will receive strong support from the local business community.

It will also be of considerable value in assisting the enormous tourism potential of the western region of Victoria, such as the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians.

The launch of the service is timed perfectly to start before the Airshow Downunder 95 at Avalon Airport between March 21 - 26.

The Government has been pleased to participate in the presentation seeking the introduction of the service that ASTA and Geelong and district representatives made to Hazelton, Mr Gude said.
