The skipper of the Panamanian cargo ship New Flame could be arrested today following an investigation into yesterday’s collision off Europa Point. As the investigation continues, the local maritime authorities are expected to present a report to the Gibraltar Government’s Deputy Chief Minister Joe Holliday in which initial indications have already suggested that the skipper of the vessel could be questioned over the incident, with the possibility of facing charges.

According to well informed sources the local authorities are already believed to have most of the necessary information available to them on the actual conditions and circumstances behind the collision, which have led to questions being asked over the procedures taken by the Panamanian vessel prior to the collision and at the time of the collision.

Gibfocus understands that local maritime officials have also been allowed to board the Torm Getrude, now in Spanish waters to continue with their investigations. The vessel which is reported to be carrying advanced navigation equipment is said to have provided substantial data over the incident which is now being processed before any further action is taken.
