Nimetz's talks in Athens included "Alexander the Great"

Атина /12/01/ 19:04

The issue of renaming the "Skopje" Airport to "Alexander the Great", which was proposed by the Macedonian Government, was included in the topics of discussions between the Greek Foreign Minister and the United Nations Special Mediator.
Mediator Matthew Nimetz said this after the meeting with the Greek Minister Dora Bakoyannis. According to the Greek media, Nimetz also said that the efforts to mediate in the issue over the name were "affected and not in a positive way".
According to the same sources, Nimetz also said his talks with Bakoyannis had covered the issue of the name, the interim agreement, bilateral relations between Greece and Macedonia and the issue arising over the name of the airport.
The UN envoy added that Athens' positions on the issue were "absolutely clear", noting that he would be traveling to Skopje on Saturday in order to hold talks with the other side.
Foreign Ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos said that Greece remains steadfast on the position that the country's proposal dating from a year ago should serve as a basis for resolving the dispute. He added that "the other side" should turn its gaze to the European future, instead of the past.
About a year ago, Greece came up with proposal of Republic of Macedonia-Skopje to be used internationally as the name of Macedonia.
