It seems most publishers underestimated the demand for Nintendo’s fast-selling Wii console and are now rushing to release games for the innovative platform. For Electronic Arts, the world’s largest game publisher, a dearth of Wii-ready games caused a 25 percent drop in February sales, while industry-wide sales rose 28 percent, according to Todd Greenwald, an analyst at Nollenberger Capital Partners.
Although some analysts are beginning to doubt the Wii’s long-term popularity prospects, for now the Wii remains the dominant console in the market and appears poised to lead the way in the foreseeable future. For many publishers, this means a push to release Wii titles as fast as they possibly can.
“Those companies are backtracking,” said Anthony Gikas, an analyst at Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis. “They’re going to need to get their best-branded product on that platform. That will take a good nine to 12 months.”
