Prehistoric Park

BCI (2007)

comments

This wondrous docu-drama (meaning part documentary, part fictional account) is a learning tool about dinosaurs that I wish I had when I was a kid. It's a fictional tale of real wildlife expert Nigel Marven and his crew of zoologists (including a peppy animal doctor and a ho- hum park keeper), as they literally travel through time thousands of years into the past to collect some of the most amazing creatures (dinos and the like!) that ever walked the earth to create the ultimate wildlife sanctuary - Prehistoric Park. This is the complete Animal Planet television series event on two discs, with a total of six mind- blowing episodes that amaze. In the first, hero Nigel goes after the always beautiful Triceratops and troublesome T-Rex, the second is all about the Wooly Mammoth, the third deals with feathered and flying dinos, the fourth is about battling the very angry Sabretooth, the fifth is for all the prehistoric bug fans (look at the size of that thing!), and the last is an amazing tangle with the massive and gigantic Deinosuchus, a ferocious croc that could eat your whole house! The seamless mix of practical puppetry, CGI, and great human reactions make Prehistoric Planet seem genuine and real, a feat for a documentary about creatures who died millions of years ago. Leading man Nigel and narrator David Jason add so much personality and credibility to this series, that even the oldest adult will be bowled over by its majestic feel. (Plus an eye-opening mini-doc on the making-of the whole thing gives even more respect to the creators!) But have no doubt - this one is really for the kids (mine thought the series was the cat's meow, telling me “write a GOOD review!”) that are into the extinct big guys...and the parents who love them too.
