Important Dates for Candidates

The following highlights your key deadlines and reminders as a candidate in the 2007 general election:

  • Before September 10 – political party candidates may file a registration form in advance. If you pre-file, you will be ready to begin financial activity immediately after the writs are issued. (Independent candidates may register after the writs are issued on September 10). See “Registration” on page 3.
  • Writs issued – September 10, 2007. All candidates who are registered with the Election Finances division may begin accepting contributions and incurring campaign expenses.
  • Last day to file Form C-1 with Election Finances division to register as a candidate – October 9, 2007
  • Candidates Information Meeting with Returning Officer – September 10 and September 24, 2007
  • Nomination paper – you or your designate must submit your paper and deposit in person at the returning office by 2 p.m. on September 18, 2007 
  • Advance Polls at the returning office – September 22 to October 4, 2007, 9 am to 9 pm
  • Area Advance Polls in Satellite Offices – September 25 to October 4, 2007, 12 pm to 8 pm
  • Area Advance Polls – September 25 to October 4, 2007, 12 pm to 8 pm
  • Recommendations for Poll Officials due from candidates – September 30, 2007 or earlier. If you do not plan to provide a list, please advise the Returning Officer so he or she can begin recruiting poll workers.
  • Last day for certification of proxies and to obtain a Certificate to Vote – no later than 8 p.m. on October 9, 2007
  • Advertising black-out days – October 9 and 10, 2007
  • Election and Referendum Day – October 10, 2007
  • Official Tabulation – October 11, 2007 (Urban areas). For remote areas allow 2 additional days.
  • Return CD-ROM(s) to returning office and destroy all copies of List of Electors – by October 15, 2007
  • Last day for campaign financial activity – January 10, 2008
  • Election Finances Filing – April 10, 2008
