  Fenton Gallery: Basil Blackshaw

Basil Blackshaw
23rd September – 21st October 2005

As a major highlight of our 2005 programme, Basil Blackshaw, one of Ireland’s greatest living painters, will exhibit at the Fenton Gallery this Autumn. Blackshaw has worked exclusively towards this show over the past 20 months creating a dramatic collection of 15 new paintings. This exhibition represents the most exciting body of new work to be exhibited by the artist in a decade.

In his seventy-third year Blackshaw presents this series of major works, dynamic brave paintings by a hugely talented man who takes nothing for granted in his art practice.

These are paintings by an artist at the very height of his career whose practice places him with the contemporary masters of world art. In them we experience intensity, integrity, beauty of painting, an embracing of the mundane or every day, a sense of the essential or perhaps the existential. They also indicate the continuation of the changing direction which his work has been taking over the past decade. His choice of arguably mundane subjects, The Studio Door’, ’Car’, ‘Wall’, ‘Six Trees”, express both an engagement with tradition and a watchful detachment.

Blackshaw was born in Glengormley, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1932. Brought up in Boardmills, he attended Methodist College Belfast and went on to study at Belfast College of Art (1949 – 51). In 1951 Blackshaw was awarded a scholarship by the Committee for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts, to study in Paris. Since this time Blackshaw has exhibited extensively most recently at the Ulster Museum, Belfast in 2002 and a major book was published by Eamonn Mallie on the artist in 2003.
