Founded in 1902, ARTnews is the oldest and most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Its readership of 200,000 in 123 countries includes collectors, dealers, historians, artists, museum directors, curators, connoisseurs, and enthusiasts.

Published eleven times a year, ARTnews reports on the art, personalities, issues, trends and events shaping the international art world. In clear, well-crafted language that is as comprehensible to the novice as it is to the expert, the magazine offers a lively, provocative, and visually stimulating package that informs as well as entertains with news dispatches from a worldwide network of correspondents, hard-hitting investigative reports, criticism, and opinion.

From its beginnings, ARTnews has balanced reporting on contemporary art with coverage of modern and old masters. In recent years, it has expanded its content to include profiles of notable collectors, museum directors and scholars; travel itineraries filled with art appreciation; inside views of the art market; and reports from the world of design.

The magazine’s thousands of contributors have included Bernard Berenson, Robert Coles, Arthur Danto, Carlos Fuentes, Pete Hamill, Steve Martin, Louise Nevelson, Francine Prose, Harold Rosenberg, William Carlos Williams, and Linda Yablonsky.

In celebration of the magazine’s 100th anniversary in 2002, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery organized “Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographs,” a traveling exhibition of 100 photographs chronicling the 20th-century art world. Seen by more than 40,000 people at four museum venues in the United States, the exhibition featured portraits of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Salvador Dalí, Damien Hirst, Pablo Picasso, and Cindy Sherman, and was accompanied by a catalogue published by Yale University Press.

ARTnews editor and publisher, Milton Esterow, a former New York Times reporter and assistant to the cultural news editor, has lectured extensively around the world about art and the art market, and is the author of The Art Stealers. During the last three decades of his leadership, ARTnews has won 31 major awards for reporting, analysis, criticism, and design—the first and only art magazine to win these awards. Executive editor Robin Cembalest is an award-winning investigative reporter who has published articles in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and El Pais, in addition to many other newspapers and magazines in the United States and Europe.
