Top-seeded Carl Albert State has another star out of West Memphis, Ark. in Daryan Selvy

The community of West Memphis, Ark. has been kind to the Carl Albert State College men's basketball program in recent years.

In previous seasons, the Vikings have had two West Memphis products go big time to the NCAA Division I level and produce big. That tandem includes Corey Brewer, who starred at the University of Oklahoma for coach Kelvin Sampson, and William Gladness, who took his talents to Indiana University, where he played for the Bobby Knight.

Now another future Division I star -- 6-6 sophomore Daryan Selvy -- is waiting in the wings after leading Poteau-based CASC to a 23-6 record and a No. 1 seed for next week's NJCAA Region II Basketball Tournament at the Oklahoma Baptist University Noble Complex.

Selvy, who is following in the footsteps of Brewer and is headed to OU next season, will showcase his talents Friday when the Vikings play in the 8 p.m. first-round game.

"He (Selvy) has had a phenomenal year," said Carl Albert State men's head coach Ron Murphree. "He's had several games in which he's had monstrous stats. He's capable of putting up some pretty good numbers."

One of those efforts this season was a 38-point, 24-rebound performance at Westark.

"He's great kid who gives a great effort every night," Murphree said. "We've had three great players out of West Memphis, including Corey Brewer and William Gladness. I think (Selvy) is one of the best I've coached."

The brackets for the Region II men's and women's tournaments were announced Friday during a press conference Friday at the Geiger Center on the OBU campus.

It was also announced that Selvy was named the Region II Player of the Year.

Before the complete brackets are finalized, two preliminary games each on the men's and women's side will be played Monday to determine the final eight-team field in each bracket.

The Seminole State College men and women must play in those preliminary games in order to reach the tournament. The Belles will host the Murray State women at 6 p.m. Monday at Raymond Harber Field House, while the Seminole State men (16-13) do battle with Eastern State College (7-23) at 8 o'clock at that same site.

The actual Region II Tournament tips off Thursday with four first-round women's games. Then, four first-round men's games will take place on Friday. The women's semifinals will be held Saturday afternoon, with the men's semifinals slated for that same night. The women's and men's championship games are set for Sunday afternoon.

All-session tickets are available for the tournament at a cost of $20 for adults and $10 for students. Individual game tickets will also be available. For more information call the Shawnee Convention & Visitor Bureau at 275-9780.

Here are the brackets, including the preliminary games on Monday. The first record in parenthesis reflects Region II record. The second record reflects overall.
