Australian Fair Pay Commission's Decision - Real Estate Sector
On 16 August 2007, the Australian Fair Pay Commission announced its decision on a new Australian Pay and Classification Scale that provides the option of commission-only wage arrangements for some real estate salespersons.  Information is available on the Australian Fair Pay Commission's webite.

Australian Fair Pay Commission's Decision
The Australian Fair Pay Commission handed down its most recent decision on minimum wages under the workplace relations system, adjusting the federal minimum wage and pay scales.  Information is available on the Australian Fair Pay Commission's website.

Stronger safety net legislation passed by Parliament

The Workplace Relations Amendment (A Stronger Safety Net) Bill 2007 was passed by Parliament on 20 June 2007. Amendments to the Bill were made in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislative changes have not yet commenced and the main changes will commence on proclamation by the Governor-General.

The legislation will amend the Workplace Relations Act 1996 to establish a fairness test for workplace agreements, and two new statutory agencies - the Workplace Authority and the Workplace Ombudsman.

Minister Hockey has announced the Government would be recommending to the Governor General the appointment of Ms Barbara Bennett as the Director of the new Workplace Authority and Mr Nicholas Wilson as the Workplace Ombudsman.

Safety Net Bill introduced into Parliament
The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, the Hon Joe Hockey MP, has introduced the Workplace Relations Amendment (A Stronger Safety Net) Bill 2007 into the House of Representatives.

The Bill will amend the Workplace Relations Act 1996 to establish a fairness test for workplace agreements, and two new statutory agencies - the Workplace Authority and the Workplace Ombudsman.

A new fairness test for working Australians
A stronger safety net for employees has been announced by the Australian Government.
A Fairness Test has been introduced to ensure employees who trade off certain conditions, such as penalty rates receive adequate compensation.

Under WorkChoices there are protections in place for young people working in the federal system. This website has information that specifically relates to young workers, including information on Australian Workplace Agreements, unlawful termination, youth wages and how to get help.
