America’s Favorite Quiz Show Launches Season 20 With Many Exciting and Historic "Firsts"

(CULVER CITY, CA, September 4, 2003) -- Jeopardy!, America’s Favorite Quiz Show, and the winner of 24 Daytime Emmy Awards, more than any other syndicated game show, begins its 20th season as the nation’s #1 quiz show on Monday, September 8, 2003. This Fall, the blockbuster series will introduce groundbreaking changes to its rules, tape shows on location at one of America's most prestigious college campuses and launch a wide variety of on-air surprises throughout the year.

For the first time this season, the sky is the limit for Jeopardy! champions, with new rules permitting a returning champion to make unlimited consecutive appearances. For the past 19 seasons, Jeopardy! winners could return to compete on the program for a maximum of five days before retiring undefeated. Now, the champion will be invited back to the show with no restriction on the number of times he or she can repeat as champion. As the champion keeps winning, he or she keeps accumulating more money - ensuring more classic Jeopardy! competition.

Alex Trebek is enthusiastic about Jeopardy!’s 20th Anniversary Season. "Removing the limit on contestants’ winnings is the first of many exciting surprises we have planned in the months ahead," he says. "There is no doubt this season will be full of higher stakes, greater risk and more unstoppable contestants."

"2003 is a milestone year for Jeopardy!," adds Executive Producer Harry Friedman. "From our historic Emmy honors to our change in the contestant rules, we are entering our 20th season with incredible momentum.

Jeopardy! will continue to demonstrate the broad range of its appeal by producing a wide variety of its trademark theme week episodes, starting with the fifth annual Back to School Week, featuring competition among 10, 11 and 12 year-olds. This year’s College Championship will be taped at Yale University, marking the series’ first-ever taping on an Ivy League campus. Fifteen students from colleges across the country will test their smarts during the two-week contest, which airs in November. In addition to Kids Week and the annual Teen Tournament, a variety of other special competitions will be announced throughout the season.

Jeopardy!, America’s Favorite Quiz Show , was recently listed among "The Greatest Game Shows of All Time" by TV Guide. The series has been the #1-rated quiz show in syndication for more than 71 consecutive ratings periods, and airs on stations representing more than 99% of the U.S. With more than an estimated 12 million viewers daily*, Jeopardy! continues to attract an audience that outdelivers most of what airs on the networks in prime time.

Merv Griffin is the creator of Jeopardy!. Harry Friedman is Executive Producer of both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. Jeopardy! is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, and is distributed domestically by King World Productions, Inc. The U.S. episodes are distributed internationally by CBS Broadcast International (CBI). King World International Productions, a subsidiary of CBI, sells and produces format versions worldwide.
