Clearwater, Florida and Nagano, Japan
have enjoyed a Sister City relationship since 1959, when the Mayor
of Nagano, Itaru Kurashima, came to the U.S. in search of a Sister
City with a similar economic and community situation.
Nagano City is located in Nagano prefecture, the third
largest prefecture in Japan. With a population of about 350,000,
it is located in the Japanese Alps.
Nagano City facilitated Clearwater's Pavilion in the Sun at the
1998 Winter Olympics. The exciting international event introduced
people from around the world to the many facets of our lovely city,
Clearwater, as well as the entire State of Florida.
The municipality of Kalamaria is located
on the southeast side of the city of Thessaloniki. It is a municipality
with deep roots in history and tradition. With a population exceeding
120,000, it is the ninth largest municipality in Greece.
Like Clearwater, Kalamaria is a seaside community
enjoyed by residents and visitors, with its economy primarily based
upon the promotion of tourism.
