Full title:Preliminary report of the Decimal Coinage Commissioners
Short title:Decimal coinage
Corporate author:Royal Commission on Decimal Coinage
Personal author:Overstone, Lord; Hubbard, John G.
Abstract:Preliminary report of the decimal coinage Commissioners after the initial consideration of the idea in 1816 to establish a more uniform system of weights and measures, and following the report of Wrottesley on decimal coinage in 1824. Standards of weights and measurement were restored after the fire in 1838 which destroyed the Houses of Parliament and the standards, and decimal coinage was mentioned in their report of 1841. In 1853 Gladstone stated that it was not the Government's intention to issue a new copper coinage on the decimal basis. The Decimal Association was set up in 1841 for promoting the adoption of the decimal system in money, weights and measures. This Commission examines 25 witnesses and postpones the examination of those favourable to the system to the end and examined persons who were against the system first. Evidence of each of these witnesses is to be found in the appendices to this report. The Commission also sent a series of questions to foreign countries in which the decimal coinage had been introduced, to ascertain reasons, difficulties, extent and the result of the introduction of the system. The report also includes several communications received by the Commission on the subject during the course of the enquiry. The Commission do not make any recommendations, and considers the question of the transition from the present system to the pound and mil system or any of the other proposed schemes still a matter for investigation
