Student Housing, Clarence Dock, Leeds
Client University of Leeds Construction
Status Completed 1993
Construction cost £9 million
In many ways the £9 million Clarence Dock development is a reflection of Carey Jones Architects’ commitment to regeneration.
The City Council was anxious to develop student’s accommodation outside the traditional student areas of the City. Leeds University, working closely with the Development Corporation and Developer contacts, were encouraged to invest in the location and help place a further vital piece in the regeneration jigsaw. The project includes 643 bed spaces, at a cost of £14, 000 per bed space.
The design includes a series of interlinked courtyards with a bar, shop and caretaker’s accommodation which not only provides a secure living environment but also opens up to the attractive waterside setting. Clarence Dock quickly became one of the City’s most pleasant and popular student residential facilities. The scheme was also partly responsible for the regeneration of the Clarence Dock area of the city, one which continues to grow today.
