Go-ahead for rallies likely

Statesman News Service
KOLKATA, Dec. 22 — Chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today sought the defence minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee’s intervention following the Army’s refusal to grant permission to the coordination committee and the CPI-M to hold rallies at the Brigade Parade Ground on 28 December and 8 January, respectively. “Who said there is a problem about the rallies? Everything is OK,’’ the chief minister said. Later, the home secretary, Mr PR Roy, said the Defence permission for both the rallies is expected by tomorrow.
The book fair at the Maidan will also be spared this year. However, henceforth the Army authorities will levy a caution money from organisers of the rallies and an undertaking to clear the litter in a bid to make the Maidan including Brigade pollution-free. However, an Army spokesman said they have not yet received any request from the coordination committee for a reconsideration of the decision.
