The George Best Memorial Trust was set up in October 2006 by the Best family, Belfast City Council, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, the Northern Ireland Office, the Irish Football Association and the Sports Council for Northern Ireland.

Representatives from each group met shortly after George’s untimely death in November 2005 to discuss a lasting memorial to our greatest ever sporting hero. They agreed to place a permanent statue of George Best in Belfast city centre.

The Best family asked that the memorial be funded through public subscription to ensure that only those who wanted to contribute would do so. They also agreed that any money left over would be used to create a living memorial of George, through soccer schools of excellence across Northern Ireland.

George Best will always be remembered, not only in his home city of Belfast, in Northern Ireland and by Manchester United supporters, but by millions throughout the world as perhaps the greatest footballer of all time.

First and foremost however, he was the iconic Belfast Boy and this is your opportunity to remember George in the place that mattered most to him.

See below for details on how you can make history by contributing to the permanent memorial that will ensure George’s legend lives on.
