Kannada litterateur Kaikini remembered

The 92nd birthday of the illustrious thinker and Kannada litterateur late Dr Gourish Kaikini was observed in an informal but meaningful function arranged here at his house recently.

The programme was jointly organised by the Kanara Shikshana Prasarak Mandal, Shri Gourish Kaikini Pratistan, Kumta and Varadigarara Vedike, Gokarn.
Dr Kaikini's close friends Vidwan Samba Dixit, Dr S V Jathar and G A Bhat Kodlekere recollected their association with him and admired his scholarship, sense of humour and above all his stoic demeanour.

Dr H G Hegde, the renowned critic, who spoke on Dr Kaikini's contribution to Kannada literature said that the dialectic between tradition and modernity has been Dr Kaikin's central concern.

All along his life, Kaikini dared to tell the truth which was mostly against the accepted conviction and common sense of the time.

Nevertheless, he always took care that it did not subvert human relationships and social peace.

Noted senior poet B A Sanadi remarked that it was a pity that Kannadigas did not recognise Dr Kaikini’s worth during his life time.

Poet and story-teller, Jayant Kaikini, felt that both for him and the lovers of literature Dr Kaikini was still alive in his works.

He made a fervent plea to shift the Gourish Kaikini Pratistan founded and operating at Kumta to Gokarn where Dr Kaikini was born, brought up, worked and lived till the end.

He pointed out that the Pratistan could work as a subsidiary to the Kanara Shikshana Prasarak Mandal which has got the required infrastructure to run it on a firm footing.

Dr V R Mallan, chairman, KSP Mandal welcomed the guests and honoured Smt Shanta Kaikini. He announced that late Kaikini’s birthday would be celebrated every year in future in BC PU college, Gokarn where he worked as a teacher.

Dr V N Hegde, secretary Gourish Kaikini Pratistan compered. Principal G V Hegde proposed a vote of thanks. A large number of Dr Kaikini’s admirers were present on the occasion.
