Boston selects Wings' Bergey in expansion draft

When the Philadelphia Wings decided to leave forward Jake Bergey unprotected in yesterday's National Lacrosse League expansion draft, Bergey had an idea that he might have played his last game in a Wings uniform.

But after he was selected by the league's new franchise in Boston, Bergey is not sure he'll put on any lacrosse uniform again.

"Philly is pretty much everything to me," said Bergey, a fan favorite who has spent his entire 10-year career with the Wings. "I'm a Philly guy, through and through. It never has really come across my mind to play for another city besides Philadelphia."

Bergey, the son of former Eagles middle linebacker Bill Bergey, is the Wings' second all-time leading scorer, with 496 points. A two-time All-Star, he helped lead the Wings to league championships in 1998 and 2001.

Bergey is coming off knee surgery this spring, and Wings executive vice president and owner Chris Fritz said he was not certain if he would play next season, prompting him to leave Bergey unprotected.

Boston, which selected one player from each of the 13 teams in the league, took defenseman Pat Merrill from the Toronto Rock with the first selection. Bergey was selected with the sixth pick.

Bergey, 33, isn't afraid to admit that he might not be the player he was at 25. But he believes he still has a lot to offer a young team like the Wings, whether on the field or in the locker room.

"I totally expect to be back in Philadelphia," said Bergey, who has considered a future in coaching. "If things don't work out as planned, I have my hands filled enough with my family and my job that I can stay busy." *
