What they said: Geelong

News

Tom Harley
"Geelong is a unique club in the sense that the whole town just gets involved. I think the whole year, and especially in the last month, there's been this apprehension of, ‘What do we do here?’

"But I think they genuinely believed that we were the best team in it. The whole town has loved it, and they're going to celebrate hard."

Cameron Mooney
"We probably didn't [celebrate] until halfway through the last quarter when you're really starting to unwind and enjoy the moment.

"It was a pretty special time for the guys, and for the club.

"This is a lot more special for me [than winning the 1999 premiership with the Kangaroos]. I've been through the highs and lows with this group for eight years now, and coming from where we came last year when we were probably the laughing stock of the AFL … 12 months later, we've turned it around and we're the best team in the competition.

"I'm just rapt."

Joel Corey
"After round five, we sat down together, and that talk has been well publicised, but I guess this has all come from that.

"We had no idea [the match would turn out like this]. We rate Port as quality side, but to win by that much was totally unexpected.

"I try not to put too much expectation on things. The game being over so early might have taken a bit of the gloss off, but I'm not complaining at all."
Steve Johnson
"Our pressure through the midfield was great and our forward pressure was also excellent, so that went a long way to helping us win the game.

"We like to take the game and I think we've shown that taking the game on and taking risks and backing yourself is the way to go.

"It's probably why we were able to kick so many goals, not only today, but during the year."

Shannon Byrnes
"I can't describe this feeling. It's just jubilation, it's everything, and it's just everything you ever play football for.

"I can't believe it, it's just so good. It was a rare situation to be so far up and to be trying to contain ourselves, but you just couldn't do it.

"The emotions just build up so high, and it's just an unbelievable day. I would recommend it to anyone."

Paul Chapman
"Yeah, it was a pretty good mark. It's been twice this year that I've got up there.

"I might start going for a few more from now on. It was just sort of there, and I thought one of the big blokes was going to get up for it, but we didn't have anyone around so I thought, ‘I might have a bit of a crack at this’, and it came off alright.

"We knew they were a quality side and we knew we had to bring our A-game, and we definitely did bring our A-game from the first bounce until the last siren, and that's what good sides do."

Andrew Mackie
"I don't know what I'm feeling at the moment. It's an amazing feeling and I'm just really happy I can be involved in it.

"We live and breathe it, all these blokes, and you just know how much hard work … when something is going wrong in someone's personal life, we all go through it together, and it just means a lot to everyone.

"It's a great effort. We sang the song again in there and all looked at each other and had a smile, and we just said to enjoy the moment."

Mathew Stokes
On Port Adelaide’s words in the week leading to the Grand Final: “We know Choco plays those mind games. We didn’t really get that wrapped up in it. Maybe if they were talking that much, they were a little bit scared of us. Come game day we just wanted to play our footy and we did. And we’ve got the medallion around our necks.”

Matthew Scarlett
“We’ll enjoy this one, but we’ve got a very good, strong group. The hunger will still be there [next year] because we want to keep experiencing this every year.

“The group of guys we’ve got are really, really hungry for success, so I don’t think we’ll go backwards next year at all.”

Brad Ottens
“We knew if we went about it the way wanted to, we were going to be pretty hard to beat. So we did that and had a good win.”

On Steven King replacing Mark Blake in the side: “It’s a hard position for big Blakey to be in and he had a huge part in what we did today. He can hold his head high, knowing that. Kingy was fantastic today – it was great to see him answer a few critics.”

Corey Enright
“We tried to focus on it quarter by quarter. It’s hard in the last quarter [to focus] when we knew we had it won … we’ll soak this in then work on next year.”
