A History of James Mastricola Elementary School

James Mastricola Elementary School is the oldest of four elementary schools in Merrimack.  The school was established in 1962 offering grades readiness through five. Today we are one of three K-4 schools with an enrollment of 415 students.  Our staff includes teaching specialists in the areas of: physical education, computer, art and music.  We also have a reading specialist, guidance counselor, school psychologist, nurse, librarian and special education coordinator.  Class sizes are in the low to mid twenties.

Our namesake, James Mastricola, emigrated from Italy to the United States at age17.  He and his brother settled in Nashua.  They began selling berries and fruit from a pushcart.  As the business grew they earned enough to open a store and buy a farm in Merrimack.  James worked the farm while his brother ran the store. When James died at the age of 80, he left his entire estate to the Town of Merrimack for the purpose of building a school.  His hopes were to inspire young people to strive for a better life through education. James did not have any formal education himself and wanted others to have the opportunity.
