The Daily Texan is probably the best known student medium in the century. It has won more national, regional and state awards than any other college newspaper in the nation. It is also the largest college publication, in terms of pages printed, circulation and budget.
It counts among its alumni the winners of 10 Pulitzer Prizes, and its graduates are among some of the finest photographers, writers, editors, advertising executives and public relations practitioners in the world. Students on the newspaper staff have opportunities to learn the business from advertising to news writing and editing to press and pre-press operations to circulation.
The Cactus yearbook is the only pictorial record of the year at the University of Texas. It records the year in a book written and produced entirely by students, offering the students them experience in writing, editing, photography, management and marketing. The Cactus, now entering its 111th year, has been known for excellence and consistently wins honors in state, regional and national contests.
The Texas Travesty, the largest college humor publication in the nation, has served as the University's student humor magazine since 1997. It appears monthly during the school year- in print and on the web, distributing between 25,000 and 30,000 copies on campus and around Austin. Though the Travesty prints material written primarily by its regular staff, any UT student, staff, or faculty member may contribute.
KVRX radio, which shares an FM signal with a community radio station, broadcasts 12 hours daily with a signal that covers metropolitan Austin and outlying communities. For the 12 hours daily when it isn't broadcasting FM, the station is carried on Internet and dorm cable. The station lives up to its motto "none of the hits, all of the time," giving new artists an opportunity to be heard. KVRX also offers news and public affairs programming in a mix sure to offer interest to students of all backgrounds. KVRX has some paid positions, as well as opportunities to learn management, marketing, fund raising and underwriting sales.
Texas Student Television, is one of the most exciting student media operations in the country because it is the only student-run low-power television station in the country. Working with a broadcast adviser, the student staff makes all decisions about programming, use of equipment, marketing outside production projects and the direction of the station. The students also offer classes to prospective staff members and others who are interested, and this experience often gives KVR students an advantage in the gaining admission to upper level broadcast courses. Opportunities abound in marketing, management, news and programming. Some of the positions are paid, and the station manager receives an in-state tuition and fee scholarship.
