Discussion In-Depth (09:46 AM EST): We're trying something new starting this week by doing an episode by episode discussion of a series that has a lot of layered material to it. Arguably the show I would call the series of the year last year, an episode by episode discussion of Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars has kicked off today. A separate thread will be started for each episode as well as an overall discussion of the series. If you're watching it bit by bit and want to make sure you catch all the nuances as well as sharing what you think is going on, be sure to join in. If you haven't seen the show, check it out as well as this is one of the best original shows that has come out in some time.

Gaogaigar Hits Hiatus (11:01 AM EST): Over the weekend, a post showed up at Toon Zone that indicated that NYAV Post was done with dub work on Gaogaigar. In contacting Media Blasters about it, we've learned that the series will be going on hiatus after the 06/05/2007 release of Gaogaigar Vol. #5 (of 10). Their Voltron project is simply taking up the bulk of their time and Gaogaigar is taking a back seat during it. Release dates for subsequent volumes will be coming at a later date but they did indicate that at this time the decision regarding the English language dub has not been determined.

Goddess Tidbits (10:34 AM EST): A bit of amusing and neat information has come out of the Ah My Goddess Season 2 guessing game for the English language adaptation. Juliet Cesario has been cast by NYAV Post as Peorth. She had previously played the role of Belldandy in AnimEigo's release of the OVAs back in the mid 90's. The role has a particularly neat aspect to it considering how Peorth figures into the storyline.

UpperDeck Tackling Kiba (10:17 AM EST): A bit of information has surfaced over the weekend after the screening of Kiba at Anime Boston. The show has UpperDeck as the master licensor of the series as it appears to be a coproduction of sorts with Japan. Based on the trading card game, it's a natural fit. Some reports indicate that the series will be handled in its eventual distribution on home vidio via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Aniplex (which has a US arm as well) is also involved in this though the details still aren't clear. The general vibe right now is that nothing is to be expected until the TV broadcast details are figured out and that the show is likely to not come through a "traditional" distributor.

Early DVD Review: Gunbuster 2 (08:53 AM EST): Skipping ahead to a June release, we've got an early look at the 06/12/2007 release of Gunbuster 2 Vol. #2 (of 3) from Bandai Visual USA this morning.

Anime Boston Panel Transcripts (07:19 PM EST): A few blow by blow transcipts have been provided and posted to the forums. Unsurprisingly, most of the panels were basically powerpoint presentations with some Q&A (if you were lucky!). If you've attended conventions over the years, you'll see a lot of familiar material. The only real interesting tidbit to me was that apparently Re: Cutie Honey has been licensed by someone.

Geneon Denies License Rumors (12:02 PM EST): According to information received from Geneon Entertainment, the information that Diamond Distribution has posted is incorrect. These were titles from an old plan that Geneon was working to acquire. They are in the process of contacting Diamond to have that erroneous information removed.

Kiba, D.Gray Man On Tap? (11:12 AM EST): According to the video schedule posted for Anime Boston this coming weekend, series Kiba will be premiering. It's the only title listed without a company associated with it giving an obvious hint to expect a license announcement for it. Also listed on the full section is that D.Gray-man will be showing in dubbed form.

Diamond Exposes Geneon (11:06 AM EST): Not unsurprising that it's happened once again, but Diamond Distribution's new catalog has listed a few new series that Geneon Entertainment has solicited to them. The two titles are being done very differently yet will excite some and spark even more debate:

  • Familiar of Zero (Zero no Tsukaima), Vol.1 (also w/Artbox) | $29.99/$39.99 | July 2007
  • Maria-Sama: Complete Collection DVD Boxset (Subtitled) | $99.99 | July 2007

DVD Review: Samurai 7 (08:46 AM EST): After missing out on the individual releases of this series, settling in to watch the entire run in short succession certainly made up for that. Released on 03/27/2007, we've got a look at FUNimation's release of the Samurai 7 Complete Box Set.

Pick of the Week (08:42 AM EST): It's a busy week for releases and the competition was fierce as both .hack//Roots and Noein came close to the top. In the end though, it's ADV Films release of Le Chevalier D'Eon Vol. #2 that took the spot as our Pick of the Week.

One Piece Release Poll (07:23 AM EST): With the One Piece article talking about some of their plans to release the series and that some aspects are up in the air, we've got a new poll running so folks here can provide some hard number feedback.

FUNimation Nabs One Piece (07:10 AM EST): According to an article at AnimeOnline, it appears that FUNimation has taken over things for the One Piece anime series. FUNimation's Lance Heiskell has some choice quotes in the piece:

FUNimation will now be working on the adaptation of the One Piece anime. We have all DVD rights to the One Piece TV series, and we’ll be working on new episodes that will air on Cartoon Network in August.

AnimeOnline: So what are the DVD plans? They’ll be uncut, right?

HEISKELL: Totally uncut. What you see is what you ge

With the length of the series, FUNimation looks like they will be approaching this in a similar vein to Viz's Prince of Tennis and Naruto releases by doing 13 episode blocks at a time for $49.98. Where FUNimation is looking for feedback is on whether they should pick up their releases with later episodes or start at the beginning. Or do both similar to what they did with Case Closed.

Manga Peek: My Heavenly Hockey Club (11:36 AM EST): Matthew's got an early look at an upcoming May 2007 title from Del Rey with My Heavenly Hockey Club Vol. #1. And no, it's not hockey that uses skates but rather field hockey, much to the dismay of our vast Canadian readership.

Wordsworth Update (11:29 AM EST): It appears a bit of erroneous information got out into retailers hands yesterday regarding Kitty Media's release of Wordsworth. As it turns out, this release will indeed be bilingual. It will not contain the "pornstar" dub however but will instead get a brand new dub. And to entice people who may own it already, the release will have all five episodes, 150 minutes total, on this single $29.95 release.

  • Kyo Kara Maoh! Season 2 Vol. #5 - 125 minutes - $24.98 - 07/10/2007
  • DVD Review: Papuwa (08:44 AM EST): Taking a look at one of this weeks releases with a title that is truly a chore, we've got a few thoughts on the 04/10/2007 title Papuwa Vol. #5 (of 6) from ADV Films.

Media Blasters New Title Solicitations (09:54 AM EST): An interesting round of solicitations from Media Blasters today via Right Stuf puts out a few volumes of a couple of series. Metropolis Blu-ray Bound? (01:46 PM EST): A report over at the DVD side of The Man Room indicates that Sony Picture Home Entertainment is close to announcing several new films for summer release on Blu-ray. Among the list is Osamu Tezuka's film Metropolis. Metropolis was originally solicited for a UK Blu-ray release earlier in the year but never materialized.

Expired License (08:38 AM EST): According to information posted from SakuraCon, a Synch-Point representative has indicated that their license to I'm Gonna Be An Angel has expired. AnimeOnDVD ADR Awards (08:36 AM EST): The February voting has ended and the winners have been announced! Congratulations to Carli Mosier for her win in Nerima Daikon Brothers and to Patrick Seitz for Paradise Kiss. Nerima Daikon Brothers Vol. #2 picked up the win for the best dub of the month!

Legend of the Pervert Edited (07:17 AM EST): Some folks are getting in this release from Kitty Media a bit early and have noted that it's not quite the same runtime as the original. One of the scenes deals with underage (as underage as animation can be) characters and it has been removed entirely. Kitty Media has confirmed that the material was removed and had even considered not releasing the title at all. Unfortunately, Kitty Media used their standard boilerplate material on the back of the package which lists it as "Uncut! Uncensored!"

Shop @ AnimeOnDVD (07:14 AM EST): The Shop has been updated with a number of good deals in today's round of daily deals from Right Stuf.

Jigoku Shojo Details (07:32 AM EST): A few more details about FUNimation's acquisition of Jigoku Shojo have surfaced this morning. Though the show has a second season that's airing/ending in Japan, FUNimation has acquired only the first season as of this announcement. Plans are to release it in October 2007 to tie into Halloween. They also appear to be renaming the series to "Hell Girl" for its domestic release. We're currently listing it as Jigoku Shojo until this last part is firmed up.

New This Week (07:29 AM EST): It's a surprisingly light week this week, which makes it obvious already what the pick of the week will likely be, but there's at least one key title due out on Tuesday:

Release Date Title Name Studio Run Time MSRP
04/10/2007   Kurau: Phantom Memory Vol. #1 (of 6) ADV Films 100 min. 29.98
    04/10/2007   Papuwa Vol. #5 (of 6) ADV Films 100 min. 29.98

You're Under Arrest Bundle (03:07 PM EST): We got a lot of responses to the Urusei Yatsura bundles at Right Stuf we mentioned the other day. A lot of AnimEigo titles are currently on sale there, but we wanted to highlight another bundle that's garnering some attention. They currently have a You're Under Arrest TV Megabundle which has all thirteen volumes of the TV series together. The list is about $325 but it's been marked down to just $129.99. As AnimEigo doesn't seem to do repackagings and repricings similar to other companies, this makes tracking down the individual volumes far less of a headache. Never mind the sweet price on it.

    Friday, April 6th 2007
Equipment Poll (09:22 AM EST): We're in the midst of finalizing some plans for a new setup here in the next month or two which means it's time to get some feedback from the readers here. We're looking at picking up a Sony KDSR70XBR2 set so if you've got one of those (or the 60XBR2 model), please take a moment to let us know what you think of anime releases on it. In addition, we want to hear what your setup is like and what you're interested in. We run this poll about once a year and it's been interesting to see the dynamic change from mostly smaller sets to larger HD capable ones over time.

Art Box Contest (09:10 AM EST): We've managed to resupply our empty art box pile a bit recently and have kicked off our first new contest for the Le Chevalier d'Eon empty art box this morning.

Early DVD Review: Paniponi Dash (08:53 AM EST): Looking into the near future once again, we've got a bit of an early look at the 04/17/2007 release of Paniponi Dash Vol. #3 (of 6) from ADV Films.

    Thursday, April 5th 2007
Cutey Honey Specs Change (10:26 PM EST): We received our final review copy of the upcoming Cutey Honey live action movie today and were thrown for a bit of a loop. The packaging indicates that it is in English 2.0 and 5.1 languages only. Our listing has it in both Japanese and English which was based off of a solicitation sometime in the last couple of months. Right Stuf and Amazon however list it as Japanese language with subtitles only. The disc itself however has Japanese 5.1, Japanese 2.0, English 5.1 and English 2.0 languages on it.

Urusei Yatsura Bundles (12:38 PM EST): The folks at Right Stuf have just put together a bunch of bundles for sale for my favorite TV series, Urusei Yatsura. Each of the ten volume segments of the series are on sale for $99.99 each ($250 retail) and bundles are offered for the movies and OVAs as well. The TV series bundles bring the cost down to just $10 a volume!

Freedom Details (09:24 AM EST): A new retail solicitation has come out that details a bit more about what to expect on Bandai Visual USA's release of Freedom. Due to this being a twin format disc, we're listing the DVD and HD DVD reviews separately so that each layer has its information laid out clearly. On the HD DVD version, we have not confirmed the resolution yet and have defaulted it to 1080i until 1080p is confirmed.

Small Bodied Manga Reviews (09:37 AM EST): Taking a break from the various first volumes we look at, the latest edition of Small Bodied Manga Reviews is up. In addition to an early look at a volume of Hunter X Hunter from Viz Media, we've also got thoughts on such titles as Case Closed, Love Roma, Trigun Maximum and W-Juliet.

Early DVD Review: Prince of Tennis (09:11 AM EST): Thirteen episode sets can throw off a review schedule like no other, but when it comes to a show like this it's quite addictive. We've got an early look today at the 04/24/2007 release of Prince of Tennis Set 1 from Viz Media.

Shop @ AnimeOnDVD (09:00 AM EST): The Shop has been updated with today's daily deals from Right Stuf.

    Tuesday, April 3rd 2007
Galaxy Angel Rune Details (09:22 PM EST): Some of the specs in yesterday's press release from Bandai Visual USA were a bit vague when it came to Galaxy Angel Rune. We've confirmed today that the first volume is indeed $19.99 and contains a single episode. We've also confirmed that the series will be in Japanese only with English language subtitles.

Gendo Senki Hits Japan (07:01 PM EST): With the possibility of a US DVD release pretty far off due to licensing issues, the Japanese release of Gendo Senki has a few more eyes on it than Ghibli films already tend to. The Watch Impress site has a new piece up on the Japanese R2 DVD release today and it looks like it'll get some decent import action. The regular edition has English subtitles and an English dub in addition to the Japanese. Multilingual edition adds Japanese DTS and several other languages, plus a second extras disc. Nothing is said about English subtitles on the collector's ed though so buy that one at your own risk.
