Rumor Control
DS Lite launches early?

Source: A handful of posters on the Cheap Ass Gamer message boards.

The official story: A Nintendo representative told GameSpot the matter was being looked into, and that they would get back to us with details.

What we heard: Last night, a moderator on the Cheap Ass Gamer message boards going by the name of "Trakan" posted pictures of a Nintendo DS Lite he had apparently just purchased from his local Target, about a week and a half before the system's official on-sale date of June 11. The pictures show the North American DS Lite packaging, the system itself, a stylus, an AC adaptor, and a receipt. Details on the receipt aren't clearly visible, but Trakan said it only rang up as a Nintendo DS instead of a DS Lite.

That posting was followed by a number of people from around the country reporting that they had picked up DS Lite systems at their local Targets and Wal-Marts. However, plenty of posters reported failure in their attempts to find a system.

GameSpot's own attempts to find Target and Wal-Mart stores selling the system were similarly stymied. After striking out at three local area stores, we expanded the net. A Target near the company's Topeka, Kansas, distribution center wasn't carrying the systems yet, nor was a Wal-Mart nearby the company's Macon, Georgia distribution facility. Finally, we tried the Wisconsin Target where Trakan reported his DS Lite was purchased from. After some dissembling, the nervous-sounding clerk there told us they had the system in stock behind closed doors, but it wasn't going to go on sale until June 11.

If you need further evidence that DS Lites have made it to American shelves, check out eBay, where a handful are now being offered by multiple sellers. They don't appear to be selling as fast or as high as their Japanese counterparts did at launch, with one unit going for a Buy-It-Now price of $159.99 (but with a $40 shipping charge for US Postal Service Priority Mail), while another was bid up to $162.50 at press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that Nintendo has launched the DS Lite early in the US. Not bogus that some stores accidentally broke street date on the system.

No thanks Nintendo. I am finally getting wise to this scheme of yours of making me buy the same hardware multiple times. :-P

great publicity for Target, driving customers in regardless of the availability of the Lite.

not that impressed. DS is a great handheld. But it just doesnt suite my taste. I use my psp for alot of stuff. I am a huge racing fan, so the racing is lame on the ds. Its not about the graphics, psp is sexy when it comes to graphics, but its gameplay and type of games arent meant for me. I am not here to run down the ds, just bored with it. Though the ds lite is a nice improvement.

The Same thing happened when the original came out. I went to my local blockbuster, and they had it at least 3-4 days early. Still, why didn't they release this version in the firts place? Their scheme of rereleasing the same thing with polish wastes us money!!!!!!

Wouldn't it be embarrassing if the packaging ends up looking slightly different? Then this person would have lots of explaining to do. Either way, this "I want it first" mentality is a little silly. It'll play games just as well in a couple of weeks as it will now.

The DS Lite would have been far too expensive to produce in 2004 in its current form. In this case, more sales volume + more time = a similar-priced more tricked-out product. I'll be waiting on the Lite as my original DS works just fine.

Upon clicking on the picture, the DS Lite looks like the regular DS, but with a white polished finish. The box seems to be a display box from where he works, probably at walmart, Gamestop, or EB games. The stylist looks to be a tire pressure gauge, the battery looks the same, and the receipt is probably for a CD or something other than a DS.

It looks believable at first, but when looked closely, it's bogus. Plus if a kid says that he purchased something that isn't supposed to come until a few months from now, especially announcing this on the internet, I don't believe it.

K1LLSWITCH....go check out all the other pictures on the Cheapassgamers.com forums. Its real. Some people even took pictures of the box inside the display case at the store. And that doesnt look like the original DS at all. The front of it when closed was more "angled" than flat. Its even got the power lights in the back.

As a former GS employee, it doesn't surprise me that Target and Wally World broke street date. They have always been notorious at breaking street date because their employees can't read the box saying "Don't put out product til (insert date)" After importing a DS Lite, I must say I am glad I replaced my old one and further making my PSP a paperweight. Heck, the DS Lite fits nicely into the PSP soft case that came with it plus a few games =)
K1LLSWITCH: ::sarcastically:: Your powers of deduction and sleuthing are second to none! You should really go out and solve some missing persons and homicide cases! I'm sure you will come up with perfect answers!! Send a pic of the DS Lite that you own that you are making a comparison of in the pic. Everything looks legit as well as the different AC adaptor (CURSE YOU NINTENDO FOR CHANGING IT!!!)

It's true. The target I work at had this memo going around today about how we weren't supposed to sell the DS until the street date and if we had put the units on display, to take them off.

Killswitch, you're funny...for one thing, this comes out next week, not in a few months. It's normal for stores, especially retail stores, to get shipments of products and then told to hold them for the street date. As always is the case, someone sells them early, I remember when a Kmart was selling StarFox before they were allowed and everyone in town ran there and they sold out before they even knew it. I'm going to try to grab a DS Lite on my way home from work...God Bless stupid retail clerks!

If true then at least the DS Lites won't launch later than announced. That to me is more important than some store clerk taking one home early pretending he has no affiliate with the shop.

Um, sorry K1LLSWITCH...that picture is NOT a fake.

I have an imported white DS Lite, and it looks just like that (the ac adapter is even the same gray color).

And the DS Lite's size is like it shows in the picture compared to the 360 remote.

You're just jealous you don't have one methinks.
