You've Been Screenshot
Gamespot's Joe Dodson explains how to transfer screens from your 360 to your PC.
Watch It »

So you bought Halo 3, shot rockets at huge scarabs, fragged brutes, and played a few online games with your friends. But aside from the crazy bubble shield, electrifying gravity hammer, and gazillion-dollar marketing budget, you may not have discovered what really makes Halo 3 special.

We're referring, of course, to the new box of tools, such as the "forge" level editor, that players can use to make their own custom content and then distribute it. While it's likely that putting such instruments in the unwashed hands of the masses will probably result in tons of bad screenshots, maps that reveal Harry Potter spoilers, and a couple (billion) teabagging videos, there will also be a handful of staggeringly brilliant works. If you aren't ready to enjoy these pearls when they're formed, you might as well be playing Halo 2.

Of course, user-generated content is hardly a new concept. For instance, BioWare's Neverwinter Nights introduced a robust suite of content-creation tools in 2002 that allowed users to create their own Dungeons & Dragons modules for play by millions of other people. But BioWare's idea was about five years before its time, and its tools were too technical for your average video game dilettante. But with Halo 3 in stores and games like LittleBigPlanet and Spore fast approaching, the time for user-generated content has finally come.

The Theater

The Good:

Records your last 25 rounds, matches, and levels; Can view the action from any angle; This is where screenshots are made!

The Bad:

The controls are unintuitive; Can't add elements like music; Can't easily convert clips to a PC format

We usually think of recordings as 2D windows into 3D realms, but the ones in Halo 3 are composed of raw data. As a result, you're able to assume the perspective of any recorded player, or just zoom around within the recording as a bodiless ghost while the action takes place all around you.

This makes the theater an amazing asset to players of all levels, whether you want to snap screenshots to share with friends or look for insights into your professional team's weaknesses. You can also easily send any screenshot or movie clip to a friend in your list, or upload them to Bungie.net to be seen by the masses. At first, you can only share six files, but for 750 Microsoft points you can increase that number to 24. If you mean to be a serious creative force in the Halo 3 community, the upgrade may be worth it. Otherwise, don't bother. On top of all that, the theater automatically saves the last 25 games you play, so you can almost always go back and relive a favorite moment. Real life needs features like this.

There are a couple of downsides, but they're greatly outweighed by the positives. Foremost, your control over the action can be a little imprecise, especially if you want to rewind. In fact, you can't rewind material recorded from the campaign at all, due to loading issues. On the flipside, if you go slow-forward, everything gets really choppy. And finally, since the games are recorded as code, there's no way of converting them to a format your PC will read without the likes of a capture card.

We know these sound nitpicky, but that's a good thing, because there isn't much in the theater worth complaining about. Bravo!

Custom Games Mode

The Good:

Lets you tweak tons of variables; Save your configurations for easy access; Create new game types!

The Bad:

Must work within the framework of preexisting types; Can't edit games while playing; Divorced from the forge; Can't be match-made

The custom games editor is a good tool that you can use to customize your very own games. You simply pick from one of the preexisting types and edit its variables until you've made it your own. In conjunction with the forge, you can create completely new Halo play experiences.

For example, one new match type we downloaded from Bungie.net is called Rocket Race. It feels like a Halo version of Mario Kart, and is even more addictive than stealing somebody else's Skittles. It's a modified VIP match with several teams of two. Everyone is invincible, armed with bottomless rocket launchers, and supplied with a mongoose. When the game begins, a goal appears on the map, and the first team to reach it gets a point. Then the goal moves to another random point, until a team captures enough of them to win the game. The whole time, rockets are flying everywhere, mongooses are flipping wildly, and everyone is literally having a blast. It's sweet.

If only making new games were as exciting. There are two major obstacles between you and an awesome, playable invention. For one, the custom match editor is a multilayered menu filled to the gills with options and details, yet you can only see one layer at a time, so keeping track of your gravity levels, spawn times, damage ratios, and point values is nearly impossible. It's also difficult to kick your imagination into high gear when you're faced with something as pragmatic as a menu system.

This should be where the forge comes into play, but alas, the forge and the games editor are divorced. You first have to make your match, and then make a corresponding map in the forge. If these two features were integrated, they'd both feel much more useful.

The final problem with custom matches is perhaps the most frustrating--you can't access them from the matchmaking menu. So if, for example, you really want to play Rocket Race but none of your friends are online to join a game, you're out of luck. Then again, if you're having people over to play, Halo 3's custom matches will surely be the life of the LAN party.

ummm jack of spades, sorry to burst your bubble or something but the xbox 360 does have better graphics than the ps3, it has a better graphics card than the ps3 because it is unified. but the ps3 does have better processors, so that mean better physics ( not that ive seen the amazing physics in any gams so far)

@yabba1: so the 360 doesnt have rachet and clank, final fantasy, MGS, or socom. who cares about vice city and GTA III, they came out years ago and werent even on the PS3 or 360, so i dont know why you brought them up. and most/all of the FPS's you listed were also on the xbox. and you're saying bioshock is crap just because apparently you're playing it on the lowest difficulty and you think its too easy? wow.
EDIT: i just looked at your profile, and according to that the only console you own is a PS2 so you have no right to say the 360 sucks.

your opinion means nothing, just cos you don't like the games on the system doesn't mean it sucks. Also you can die in Bioshock. Play it on a harder difficulty.
Remember that you are comparing all of the PS consoles to the 360, not fair competition. The PS3 on the other hand has none of what you said yet. The 360 already has great games and DLC for GTA IV. If you love PS so much go play it now, not start stupid wars on gamespot.

Hickamie14 - Playstation has better games than the 360. You dont have any ratchet and clank, (I mean where would anyone be without ratchet and clank!!!) final fantasy, Vice city or GTAIII. On top of that you dont have any metal gear solid, socom, or any other great stealth game (apart from Riddick). We also have a bunch of FPS - Timesplitters, COD games, Medal of Honour games, Black, project snowblind, maybe not as good as Halo games but all of them together more than compensate for the lack of halo. If you had a playstation you'd know I was right. 360 sucks. And bioshock is crap - you cant die - where's the fun in that?

Man I love the 360, it has so many great games, like CoD 2, GoW, Bioshock, Rainbow Six: Vegas, GRAW, Forza 2, not to mention the game at hand Halo 3!

I didn't have time to finish my last comment so know I will. The innovation that phaserde was talking about in UT3 sounds sucky to me, I don't want to go into a ranked match with moders and get my a** kicked. Maybe it is because I don't mod, and I'm only a victim of mods, but that innovation just sounds stupid and bad. Also as you said phaserde about Halo 3 belonging on the Wii because it has childish gameplay and 8 year olds play it, that is so wrong. First of all saying it's a bad game because people who are 8 play it annoy you is not a ligitement complaint about the game Bungie can't stop them from playing so it's not there fault and that is why they installed the in game easy to use muting system for Halo 3. Second if Halo was childish why did it get a M rating? And finally the reason everyone loves halo so much is because it's just fun, you don't have to sit there and camp for five minutes to get akill like in Vegas or GRAW(nothing against tyhose games) or even in CoD(I love that game nothing against it) you just go out shoot run away let your sheilds recharge and hope you get better luck in the next fight. Also It is so easy to talk with friends and brag to them espicailly with saved films now, it's a blast. And here's more re3asons. It's fun to blow stuff up and shoot stuff in Halo 3 because the explosions are so awesome, it's also fun to get hit by a grenade and still live to fight, Also if you take it seriously like in ranked games it's alot of fun. So the childish gameplay is not true do to the blood, explosions, and the fact that the sheild makes sense, I mean it's supposed to be the future. So I garuntee you that UT3 is notgoing to get anything higher then a 9 and it will probably get like a 8.8 which is not bad and it'll probably be a good game, just not as good or popular as halo.

Okay phaserde occording to you Halo 3 suck's and thats your opinion, I can't tell you other wise it's not my place, but I will tell where you are wrong and my opinion. UT3 has mods for a console your right that is innovative but what else does it do. Probably the same old stuff the other one's so don't go saying that UT3 is so innovative and Halo 3 is not just cause UT3 does one thing different. I mean Halo 3 does a few things different, a map editor on a console shooter, replay films on a shooter. Now that is two things that in my oppinion are equaly innovative as the mods ting that UT 3 has, and what you said about Halo 3's graphics being barely better then the other Halo's, that's just stupid. Halo 3 has way better graphics then Halo 2 at first glance and when you pay attention to the textures and details it has so much better graphics then Halo 2. Also Halo 3 is not just Halo 2 remade, not even close as I mentioned before the features they added plus the equiptment, and all the other little things clearly take it away from being another Halo 2 in my opinion. And also if a game does get a 9.5 from gamespot and as you said games usually need to be 80% innovation, how good nust the gameplay be? I'll tell you right now it's amazing. Now a few more point's,in UT3 you shoot aliens and you have a very forgiving life system same as in Halo 3 but I garuntee you that Halo 3 has way better gameplay and is most likely much more finelly tuned.

All I see is a bunch of jealous PS3 & PC fanboys crying out because they don’t have Halo 3.

For those who do have Halo 3 are crying because Forge is not a full on Map Editor. Yeah me too., but I got over because it is fun to play.

Halo 3 will go to PC some time and when it dose it will have a full on Map Editor like Halo 2 did.

There is someting about Halo that I just like better than every other FPS out. I can’t quit put my finger on it.

I have played Half life 2 and got board. I like things they did with it, like the puzzles, but not enough to hook me in.

You can’t say it’s a bad game in any way, because it has a fan base of over a Million and a Million gamers can’t be wrong!

I have to admit I was wrong, Halo 3 does not have good amount of customization. It has alot, I completely forgot about the Elites and their armor options and emblem. So Halo 3 has alot of customization because you can pick from like nine helmets shoulder's and chest options from the spartans alone plus the Elites have like 5 helmets shoulders and chests for them. And then there's emblem options, there is alot you can do with emblems and colors cause there is alot of logo's to choose from as well as backgrounds, and colors to choose from, so if you unlock all the stuff, and put some effort into it you could easily come up with a really cool profile that you would never see exact on someone else unless one of your friends copies you. So Halo 3 has alot of customization, almost as much as Rainbow six Vegas if not as much with all things considered. almost forgot you can also change the voice effects to a Womens and also alter the screen brightness at any time by pressing start, so even more stuff.

miyijura first off what kind of name is that, did you just type in random letters or somthing? Second have you played Halo 3 for at least a few hours? And third name some games that are way better or even a little better than Halo 3, cause I bet you can't. And Halo 3 did deserve a 9.5 and no way did it deserve anything lower than a 9.0 definately not a 8, and if you want to know why it deserved it's rating read my other comment about this matter, and if you still want more reasons and more detailed reasons just ask and look for my response, cause I have no problem proving someone wrong about Halo nor do I have a problem enlightening them to play Halo 3 and have a whole mess of fun for a few years.

I can't really say which Halo I liked best right now cause I have not really played Halo 3 enough, but I thought that Halo CE was way better than Halo 2's campaign, however, Halo 2's Muilti-Player was better than Halo CE's, so I guess they were equel in my opinion.

Halo 3 is not the best fps in market. There´s a lot of better games for PC, XB and PS3.
Personally I think that the score is over valuated, this game is not a 9.5 game. Maybe an 8 but never a 9.

I think I'll stick to the competitive side of Halo 3. Anyone who bought Halo for casual play probably wasted their money. The bread and butter of Halo 3 is the online multiplayer.

Also, supergamer918 obviousely never played Time Splitters 2. Which had a great map editor.

you dont annoy me with your comment control2000. I really dont care what you say, I was asking several questions...no one here seems to be able to answer anything about thier beloved halo. IF you HAD read it, you would see half that long post WAS about UT3 and its innovations in relation to the innovations found in Halo and why it got the score it did. I asked for justification. AND further more if you read it, you'd see the part where i said once upon i time i DID really enjoy the Halo series. Read the question before before you attempt a response geez.....And another thing, why do Xbox'ers have to go and report me for asking questions about the game. What, I cant ask people if they felt this game got the score it deserved? I cant ask what makes this game so popular?? You people are worse than the American government when it comes to your "ask no questions" policy. If im annoying you i guess i musta touched a nerve...sorry about that lil ones next time ill try not to hurt your feelings through the use of questions.

Why Halo 3 is good? why is so important?........when a game can make a guy like PHASERDE, who actually don't like halo at all, he spent all those lines with all the stuff that people, definitely me, will not read. I bet you never wrote this much for UT3, a game that you actually like....so in conclusion, Halo is like the yankees in video games, you love it like crazy or hate it as crazy.........in my opinion, yankess suck, halo RULESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Flat_Line_____

I see the features that bungie have started with filesharing and custom gametype downloads being the future for consoles having access to actual mods for other games."

Its funny you say that because they didnt "start" anything. if you didnt already know, UT3 has full Mod ability. You will be able to install Mods made for the PC version, on the console version. THATS innovation. That alone is more innovation in a console game than we've ever seen since the jump to 16-bits. This coupled with the FAST play of UT3 in my opinion will make for a much better game. Also blood/gore UT is known for. I mean UT3 prolly wont outsell Halo or have as big an ad campaign, but i think when it comes down to gameplay and innovation, it should easily beat out Halo in fun factor. I bring UT into it because UT is probably the closest comparison in genre. So if you look at features and overall style of gameplay I think UT3 has potential to be game of the year. I mean ya Halo 3 has an in-game map editor..but thats nothing new ultimately, but installing PC mods on your console for UT which has such a huge modding community cant possibly be over looked by anyone. THAT my friend is innovation. When a game is in it's second + appearance, theres nothing to do but ADD innovation to the game and this is where I think Halo is hugely like every other Halo and every other shooter...they did nothing really. Aside from that, i found the game to be slow paced and BORING (ya i said it..but i actually felt that way) and i personally like the more believable, slightly more realistic sci-fi rather than the sometimes childish kind (this game would be acceptable on any Nintendo system past and present because its appropriate for a kids 6 and up). Lastly, I didnt find the graphics to be an upgrade from other halo's. So with all this, even if you think the story is the greatest (which its not because like i said, its been covered by a million movies and games --even games on atari), I dont understand why this game gets a 9.5. Again, I played it and although was a Halo fanatic at one point in my life, I couldnt stand to play this game for more than 45 minutes before I decided it sucked and was the exact same experience I had when i was back in highschool playing Halo 1. So Its times like these I think that gamespot is indeed payed off by MS ( i mean its not THAT far fetched right? MS is throwing money at everyone and anyone), if not fanboys of MS. Sorry but thats my opinion. Does anyone else (including those who own the game) think that such a high score for a game thats essentially a short halo 2 with a new menu and replays is a bit much??? Typically games only get that if like 70-80% of it is innovative and clearly Halo 3 does NOT have that percentage of innovation sooo whats the deal...

Halo: Combat Evolved 2nd best in my opinion, Halo 3 the best, and I never enjoyed Halo 2, it was way too easy and stuff, Halo: Combat Evolved used to be my favorite because it was the hardest one and, obviously, the first one, so in my opinion it was the best, but Halo 3 came along and obviously, everyone was surprised at how good the game play is, the graphics, and all the goodies that come along with it, I wished that I could get my hands on Legendary Edition, if its that one, with the SPARTAN MJOLNIR helmet, and a life sized Master Chief, that **** would be the bomb! Enough of that, what are your opinions on this matter?

graphics rock, cant go wrong with 64bit graphics and the Halo franchise....campaign was fun but it got a little repetitive, especially when you're on the Cortana mission...the flood were a pain in the back side.....but i liked it...i wish there was more action though....a little bit more...how should i say....action like the first two.....there was more of a challenge in the first two than there were in this installment....but as i said (if i didn't sorry), it was a great game....def. worth it.

GKclassof2005, your points about Halo being nothing specail were stupid and here's why. First of all It is Halo and every one wants to "Finish the the fight so of course they rushed out and got it and said it was amazing because they finished the fight. Secondly the Forge, name one shooter( preferably first person shooter) that has a map editor other than Halo 2 for Vista, my gues you probably can't, and besides it's crazy fun just going into Forge and blowing stuff up. Third, Multi-Player i can't believe you said that, yea it's master cheifs killing each other, yea there is not much customization( although there is a good amount of options) but I've played a lot of games online, and i have never seen such finely tuned weapons, maps, and vehicles. The gameplay is by far one of the best if not THE BEST ever to grace online play. Now graphics, they are far better than XBox graphics you just don't pay attention, but still they arn'y great but you said it yourself graphics don't make the game. Bungie.net is awesome and you were right. This game integrates so much into the truely amazing gameplay Forge, saved films(never done before in a shooter) Nicely polished graphics bada** guns and sweet vehicles, a good amount of customization, the ability to finish the fight in FOUR player online co-op with campaign scoring(never done before) and some other sweat features. This game has probably the highest replay value ever, and really fleshed out easy to use and acces lobbies help the game live up to it's hipe, potentail and amazingly fun online gameplay. One more thing, have you ever played Halo 3? do you own a XBox 360 or XBox? if not than shut your trap, about everything and go play your 8.0 rated warhawk with the other 50 people that are'nt enjoying ONE of the greatest games ever created and by far the best game this year. All this is way more than most games have in them in fact most good games either pick great multi-player depth or gameplay, but rarely ever do they have both or for that matter a really good campaign with some next-gen awesome features like Halo 3 does so that is why it is ONE of the greatest games ever.

Oh and just for the record... I don't think Halo 3 is the best game ever made. Its a damn good one but its not the best... (IN MY OPINION) see how that works :O shocking how people can be reasonable.

It is pointless trying to argue with a sony fanboy about Halo 3. Who cares what they say. Oh and gkclassof2005.... LISTEN YOU CLOWN... ITS CALLED AN OPINION... check Wiki for the definition if you don't understand what it means. Trust me your little rant is nothing more then Halo 3 envy.. As much as you say " I can go out and buy it right now" if you owned a 360 and were open minded you would buy it. So go play Resistance and Motor Storm untill MGS4 comes out so you can say how that is the best game ever made...

All that new stuff is worthless ... only good for people that are always complaining, Halo has always been excelent. Halo 2 was better than Halo 1, and Halo 3 is better than Halo 2, what else do you need? if you enjoyed it and it lasted why can't it be the same this time ... They shouldn't be dedicating so much time on stupid things like replays and stuff, maybe a little more work on the graphics engine would've been nice.

My opinion: good things that improve somehow are still good or very good, not everything has to be like the Wii which tries to do everything in a different (mostly crappy) way.

Rot_Kopfsalt Does it really add that much to the game tho? If your not interested in machinima do u really use it? Forge looks like fun tho.

I'm not interested in machinima in the least, and I've spent hours and hours already watching videos, taking pictures, and laughing my arse off.
