"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" garnered seven noms


'Sunshine,' 'Pirates,' 'Borat' top Key Art noms

Lionsgate leads studios for 2nd year

"Little Miss Sunshine," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Borat" scored seven nominations apiece to lead the field for The Hollywood Reporter's 36th annual Key Art Awards. Lionsgate topped the studios with 22 noms, and Trailer Park led the agency category with 14.

It was the second consecutive year that Lionsgate earned the most studio nominations after posting 26 last year.

The Key Art Awards winners will be announced June 15 at the Beverly Hilton, with actor-comedian Rob Corddry serving as host.

"Now in its 36th year, the Key Art Awards is the premier event for the movie-marketing community, and as always we're thrilled to have the opportunity to honor the creative individuals who generate the eye-catching promotional materials that help drive movie attendance and DVD sales," said John Kilcullen, publisher of The Hollywood Reporter. "There is no other awards show like the Key Art Awards, and this year's event promises to be as fun and irreverent as ever."

For this year's awards, horror, animation and documentary film categories were added to the competition in addition to a best Web site design award and a special recognition Internet award.

"We retooled the awards this year to better reflect what movies are in theaters and where people are watching their advertising," said Bob Israel, chairman of the Key Art Awards advisory board and executive producer of the show. "And we're keeping an eye on the growing role of nontraditional media and how it's being used for marketing."

Lionsgate topped the Key Art noms with such films as "Crank," "Saw III," "Hard Candy" and "The U.S. vs. John Lennon" leading the way. The Walt Disney Co. and its Buena Vista Pictures distribution arm came in second among studios with 14 nominations. All but one of the noms were for "Pirates" and "Cars."

On the agency/vendor side, Trailer Park earned 12 nominations, while Craig Murray Prods. came in second with 11 noms followed by New Wave Creative with nine.

Among the noms for Fox Searchlight Pictures' "Sunshine" were comedy poster, special recognition print, comedy trailer and comedy TV spot. 20th Century Fox's "Borat" was nominated for comedy poster, teaser poster, outdoor advertising and comedy trailer, among others. And Buena Vista's "Pirates" made a particularly strong showing in the co-branded arena, with three noms in co-branded audiovisual and another two for co-branded print. "Pirates" also was nominated for special recognition print and action-adventure trailers.

The Key Art Awards, the only competition in which working professionals honor their peers for designing and creating motion picture marketing materials, attracts more than 1,500 executives and creative professionals from all of the major studios and ad agencies. The awards feature 34 categories, including posters, trailers, TV spots, print, outdoor, Internet, home entertainment and co-branded advertising.

This year's awards committee received a record 1,452 submissions. More than 400 movie advertising and marketing professionals served as judges to view and rank the entries. Judging took place at West Hollywood's Pacific Design Center, and the eligibility period for entries was January 2006-December. Nielsen Research Group administered and tabulated the ballots and also will determine the winner in each category. The Nielsen Co. is the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.

This year's Key Art Awards sponsors include APM Music, Corbis, Crew Creative Advertising, the Los Angeles Times, Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions and Weston/Mason Entertainment Advertising.
