WANNANOSAURUS
WUERHOSAURUS

XENOTARSOSAURUS
XIAOSAURUS

YANGCHUANOSAURUS
YAVERLANDIA

ZEPHYROSAURUS
ZIGONGOSAURUS
ZIZHONGOSAURUS

WANNANOSAURUS
Pronunciation: wah-NAHN-uh-SAWR-us
Translation: Wannan Lizard
Also known as:
Description: Herbivore, Bipedal
Order: Ornithischia
Suborder: Marginocephalia
Infraorder: Pachycephalosauria
Family: Homalocephalidae
Height:
Length: 3.3 feet (1 meter)
Weight:
Period: Late Cretaceous

Notes: Wannanosaurus is one of the smallest pachycephalosaurs, and it may be the most primitive flat-headed form of the bone-headed dinosaur family.

WUERHOSAURUS
Pronunciation: WER-oh-SAWR-us
Translation: Wuerho Lizard
Also Known As:
Description: Herbivore, Quadrupedal
Order: Ornithischia
Suborder: Thyreophora
Infraorder: Stegosauria
Family: Stegosauridae
Height: 9 feet (2.2 meters)
Length: 23 feet (7 meters)
Weight:
Period: Early Cretaceous

Notes: Found in China, Wuerhosaurus is the first stegosaur from the Cretaceous Period to be discovered. Like other stegosaurs, it probably had two rows of long, low bony plates down its neck, back, and upper tail. Its tail was probably studded with four spikes. The purpose of the bony plates is unknown. It may be that they served as radiators, dissipating body heat during the day.

XENOTARSOSAURUS
Pronunciation: zee-noh-TAR-suh-SAWR-us
Translation: Strange-Ankle Lizard
Also Known As:
Description: Carnivore, Bipedal
Order: Saurischia
Suborder: Theropoda
Infraorder: Ceratosauria
Family: Abelisauridae (not confirmed)
Height:
Length:
Weight:
Period: Late Cretaceous

Notes: Xenotarsosaurus is known from fragmentary remains discovered in Argentina. It had fused ankle bones -- an unusual feature in large predatory dinosaurs.

XIAOSAURUS
Pronunciation: Zhou-SAWR-us
Translation: Small Lizard
Also Known As: Yandusaurus
Description: Herbivore, Bipedal
Order: Ornithischia (not confirmed)
Suborder:
Family:
Height: 1.5 feet (0.5 meters)
Length: 3.3 feet (1 meter)
Weight:
Period: Middle Jurassic

Notes: Xiaosaurus is known from fragmentary remains recovered in China at the Dashanpu quarry, a site that has produced some of the best-preserved dinosaurs ever discovered. The remains of Xiaosaurus, however, are only complete enough to place it in the ornithischian order of dinosaurs. This means that it was bird- hipped, bipedal, and herbivorous.

YANGCHUANOSAURUS
Pronunciation: yang-chew-ANN-uh-SAWR-us
Translation: Yang-ch'uan Lizard
Also Known As:
Description: Carnivore, Bipedal
Order: Saurischia
Suborder: Theropoda
Infraorder: Ceratosauria
Family: Megalosauridae (not confirmed)
Height: 15 feet (4.6 meters)
Length: 32.8 feet (10 meters)
Weight:
Period: Late Jurassic

Notes: Yangchuanosaurus was closely related to Megalosaurus, and possibly related to Metriacanthosaurus.

YAVERLANDIA
Pronunciation: yah-ver-LAND-ee-ah
Translation: Yaverland (Battery)
Also Known As:
Description: Herbivore, Bipedal
Order: Ornithischia
Suborder: Marginocephalia
Infraorder: Pachycephalosauria
Family: Pachycephalosauridae (not confirmed)
Height: 2.3 feet (0.7meters)
Length: 3.3 feet (1 meter)
Weight:
Period: Early Cretaceous

Notes: Named for Yaverland Battery on the Isle of Wight, England. Yaverlandia is one of the earliest known and smallest pachycephalosaurs. Yaverlandia's skull identifies it as a bone-headed dinosaur, so-called because their head bones were extremely thick. (The skull of the much larger and later, Pachycephalosaurus, was up to 10 inches or 25 cm thick.)

ZEPHYROSAURUS
Pronunciation: ZEF-fer-uh-SAWR-us
Translation: West Wind Lizard
Also Known As:
Description: Herbivore, Bipedal
Order: Ornithischia
Suborder: Ornithopoda
Family: Hypsilophodontidae
Height: 3 feet (0.9 meters)
Length: 6.6 feet (2 meters)
Weight:
Period: Early Cretaceous

Notes: Discovered in Montana, Zephyrosaurus had ridged teeth for chewing plant food and was closely related to Hypsilophodon.

ZIGONGOSAURUS
Pronunciation: zee-GONG-guh-SAWR-us
Translation: Zigon Lizard
Also Known As: (Possibly) Omeisaurus
Description: Herbivore, Quadrupedal
Order: Saurischia
Suborder: Sauropodomorpha
Infraorder: Sauropoda
Family: Cetiosauridae
Height: 25 feet (7.6 meters)
Length: 60 feet (18.2 meters)
Weight: 39,900 pounds (18,100 kg)
Period: Late Jurassic

Notes: Zigongosaurus is known from fragmentary remains. It may be the same as Omeisaurus.

ZIZHONGOSAURUS
Pronunciation: zee-ZONG-guh-SAWR-us
Translation: Zizhong Lizard
Also Known As:
Description: Herbivore, Quadrupedal
Order: Saurischia
Suborder: Sauropodomorpha
Infraorder: Sauropoda
Family: Vulcanodontidae
Height: 11 feet (3.4 meters)
Length: 30 feet (9.1 meters)
Weight:
Period: Early Jurassic

Notes: The discovery in China of Zizhongosaurus, a small, primitive sauropod, established the presence of sauropods in China during the Early Jurassic Period. Their presence early in the history of Sauropoda indicates that Chinese sauropods were indigenous to the area. Zizhongosaurus may have resembled Barapasaurus, which existed in India at about the same time.
