Heritage

OK, so you’ve learned that that American icon, the Chevrolet, was named after a man originally from Switzerland. But what about the governor of Vermont, Madeleine M. Kunin? And Eddie Rickenbacher, the “flying ace” of both world wars who later headed Eastern Airlines? And then there is the famous naturalist, Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz, described as one of the “founding fathers” of the modern American scientific tradition.

That there was no shortage of emigrants to the US from Germany, Italy or Ireland is well-known. But what about emigrants from countries of a lesser size and smaller population, such as Switzerland? When, and why, did people choose to leave this alpine country and make their home on the other side of the Atlantic? What became of the immigrants, and did they retain their Swiss roots in any way? Have you got Swiss ancestors, and would like to learn more about the country they came from?

Swissroots can help you discover your heritage.
