Potable water expansion works underway with over 60mln birr in SNNP State

Addis Ababa, November 28, 2006 (WIC) - The SNNP State Water Resources Bureau said it has allotted over 60 million birr budget to boost the potable water coverage of the state from 54 to 59 percent.

Bureau Head Jemal Reshid told WIC that the expansion of potable service facilities would be carried out in 34 woredas and 21 towns of the state.

Accordingly,capacity building activities,design and study for new water facilities,maintenance of existing potable water facilities,development of springs,among others, are being executed by involving the public,Jemal explained.

The head stated that the bureau has succeeded to scale up the potable water coverage of the state from less than 10 percent 15 years ago to 54 percent last budget year.

The development strategies designed by the government and the participation of the public have greatly contributed to the expansion of potable water facilitates,Jemal stressed.

Besides, the bureau has managed to raise the latrine service coverage of the state to 94 percent thus attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at state level ahead of schedule,he further noted.

The bureau is working jointly with non-governmental organizations,the public and various associations so as to expand potable water and latrine facility services coverage in the state,the head pointed out.
