Role Models WA

Role Models WA provides assistance and support to remote Indigenous communities of Western Australia.

Headed by former Perth Wildcats basketball player and Director, Ricky Grace, the Role Models team based in Perth , visit Indigenous communities as far afield as the Pilbara, Kimberley and Goldfields-Esperance regions. They visit over 1,000 Indigenous Australians at schools, events or local community centres each year.

Role Models WA programs offer sporting and development programs with mentoring to foster leadership, teamwork and confidence to encourage Indigenous communities to help their children develop sporting skills, healthy physical education and incentives to stay in school.

The team work with primary and high school aged students as well as younger children and adults in the community providing presentations, motivational speeches, sporting and social activities. Messages of sport, physical health and well-being and no drugs or alcohol are delivered by elite sporting role models to communities in various fields of basketball, football, softball and netball, as key motivators to their success.

The programs aim to enrich the lives and enhance the futures of Indigenous people through delivering innovative programs and providing supportive positive role models for young Indigenous people of Western Australia.

A Message from the Director

Our children's futures

During my time visiting the communities everyone welcomes us with open arms and trusts us with their children and spirit. I am rewarded constantly with witnessing the enthusiasm of the children both during and after-school. It is equally enjoyable to witness the adults joining in on the after-school activities.

It is especially pleasing to see the proactiveness of the Balgo, Tom Price and Halls Creek communities in recognising the importance sport is to the children by raising funds to build basketball courts. Other communities who uphold similar beliefs should be applauded and encouraged.

The children move me with their trust in retelling dreamtime stories to me at their sacred watering holes and I only hope that I have given them as much to cherish as they give me.

Ricky Grace Director

Through leadership and development, sports and education, Role Models WA provides assistance to West Australian Indigenous youth who suffer from poverty, sickness, misfortune or a disconnectedness from their community.
