Brief historic review of the city

Dusseldorf has developed from an insignificant rural settlement on the Düssel River into a prosperous metropolis. The history of Dusseldorf starts in 1135, with the establishment of a little town Keiserswerth, currently on the northern edge of Dusseldorf, as an outpost of the empire of Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa. Keiserswerth became officially the district of Dusseldorf in 1229. In 1288 the little village on the Düssel River was declared a town by the earl Adolph Von Berg. In 1380 Dusseldorf became the regional capital of the dukes of Berg. During this period the city developed rapidly. Later on, the Seven-Year War and the battles of Napoleon caused the city destruction and poverty. In the 19th century Dusseldorf developed and became a large modern city. World War I and the economic slump affected Dusseldorf badly, and World War II, which followed, turned the city into a heap of ruins. Out of more than half a million inhabitants less than 400,000 remained and the Jewish community in the city was totally destroyed (only 249 survived out of over 5,000). There is a memorial statue in the city in memory of the Nazi victims. The British occupation of the Rhine area and Westphalia helped in restoring the city. In 1946 the British appointed Dusseldorf the capital of the new district of the Northrhine-Westphalia. Dusseldorf recovered rapidly and turned into a centre of commerce, administration, services and industry.
