08 City signs up George

High street fashion king George Davies has given his support to Liverpool's European Capital of Culture celebrations by signing up to be an official 08 Ambassador - with a poem!

The founder of Next has taken the city's army of culture champions past the 5,000 mark - a year to the day the 08 Ambassador campaign was launched.

But instead of the usual expression of support in the 08 Ambassador application, George expressed his love for Liverpool by penning a 10-line poem entitled: 'Liverpool First'.

The 65-year-old joins a long list of high-profile 08 Ambassadors such as Yoko Ono, Liverpool FC ace Steven Gerrard, Ken Dodd, Cherie Booth, QC, Chris De Burgh and John Conteh.

George, who was born in Crosby like Cherie, attended Bootle Grammar School before revolutionising high street fashion by launching Next and designing for Asda and now Marks and Spencer.

Of his home city, George said: "There's nowhere in the world quite like Liverpool, the people, the passion, the fun, the fighting spirit and of course the football make it a fantastic place that will always have the most special place in my heart."

Cllr Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: "We're delighted to have the support of George - he is a hugely successful Liverpudlian and embodies the city's love of fashion and its unrivalled track record for creativity. Plans are on track for an unforgettable year in 2008 and the support of the people will be the x-factor that propels the city up and on."

The Liverpool Culture Company aims to have 10,000 Ambassadors and has already attracted people from all walks of life, across 50 different countries from Australia to Venezuela. In return for their love of the city, 08 Ambassadors receive a pack all about 2008 and Liverpool, special offers plus weekly e-updates to help spread the word.

Jason Harborow, Chief Executive of the Liverpool Culture Company, added: ''Our Ambassadors are a fantastic asset in generating excitement about 2008. To have 5,000 within one year is amazing. When you consider the people they know be it their neighbours to the world famous, then that's the type of advertisement no city can buy.''
