Gatewood arrested again

Former Longhorn safety Tyrell Gatewood is in Travis County Jail, waiting to post bail on two misdemeanor drug charges.

He was arrested Saturday night for marijuana possession and for possession on a controlled substance.

It was his second arrest in a month. Gatewood, who had been in his final semester with the football team, was suspended indefinitely Sept. 13 on possession charges. Texas coach Mack Brown said he could return to the team only if he cleared up his legal problems.

Denny Franch:
You sound like a pathetic, wanna-be college graduate that never was and never will be...grow up! Our football team might not be even close to the best, but it has many other great programs there. (i.e. they were ranked nationally as #1 in Petroleum Engineering Department)Not that you probably care because you probably don't value an only see an university for its athletic abilites.

Would you please stop printing news about this loser, Gatewood. He's a thug. Not every player that comes to Ausitn is a choir boy, we misjudge players just like every other team. Mack kicked his @$$ off the team and that's all he can do.

and truth be know, I don't mind a few thugs running down the other teams QB. We could use a little of that attitude about now.

please keep recruiting all the gangbangers you want. We will take all the 2nd team all district guys we can handle, they stay out of jail and rack up the TD's. you wish you had Crabtree

By the way Jerry, UT is #23rd and falling fast. You got there on name alone hows it feel at the bottom of the BIG 12. Did you hear that I think K-State just scored on you again. Ha Ha

It's obvious that the 'daddy' 'tough love' approach doesn't work...........

What we need now is a good ol' Bear Bryant the one he used at a$m back in the day.......find out who REALLY wants to keep his scholarship and remain on this team.

Too bad about Gatewood. Another talent wasted. But don't try to pin his stupidity on The University. He is what he is, and Mack isn't responsible - at least not for this latest instance.

As for the zero u game, I was kind of expecting a blow out. I never like or except a loss of any sort, but the fact that only a couple of turn overs (one in particular) kept us from winning that game made me feel pretty good about our team. It also made me realize that zero u is good but certainly not great.

Marcos hit the nail on the head. This type of behavior dosen't begin at the college level; however, when recruiting Mack needs to talk to more people than just the high school coaches. The coaches are the very people who are responsible for getting these playes off by covering up for them. You can't possibly have done your homework when so many of your recruits are getting in trouble with the law. His graduation rate stinks. If I here Mack say one more time that he recruits players with integrity I think I will throw up. When will he ever start taking charge and become a leader. His high salary is a waste of money. I am a Longhorn fan and hope that somehow my observations are flawed. Please let me know if I am incorrect.

I have two questions for Mack Brown concerning all of his players: 1. In 1 year, do you want your players to like you? 2. Or, do you want to respect and learn from you?

All of this reminds me of the years of Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson. They were good coaches, but they didn't mind who they recruited and boy, did the schools pay for that!! (And may I comment on both of their "hairdos?")

I'm from Oklahoma and just the name "Barry Switzer" still embarrasses me and causes me to shake my head in disbelief.

As much as I love Texas, you sure won't see Bob Stoops losing control of his team. No way, no how.

Are we going for "zero tolerance" on Longhorn actions on and off the field or shall we just say "they are boys" and turn them loose?
My vision is that they get discipline on and off the field. We can start by putting them in dorms with monitors who have authority to help them learn that with privelege of representing the University, comes responsibility and earned pride. We can have a barbershop to get those locks trimmed so that they look like they are proud of themselves and what they stand for.

Russ - you sound like a pathetic, whiney aggie. Yes, you're right, not a single Longhorn or fan has any class at all. aggies locked up the entire dose of class for all of college football. Please, when you must constantly point out how little class others have while touting yours generally means you have no class, nice try though.

As to Gatewood... well, how stupid do you have to be? It was very unlikely that he'd ever come back to the team, but he could have straightened himself up, played ball at a smaller school and got his education. So much opportunity being *issed away by kids, all over the nation. It's sad to see how screwed up priorities are with the 'me' generation.

This is the most dissappointing Texas team in a very long time, if ever. On the field they lack motivation and discipline and off they lack guidance and discipline.

Former Longhorn or current Longhorn, it doesn't matter. . . once a Longhorn always a Longhorn!

Mack should go into the Bail Bonds business. He could be kinda like Dog The Bounty Hunter!!!!!

I work in a public school system. Many of our HS football stars are useless oxygen thieves. They are allowed to get away with anything and everything. Some of them who are functionally illiterate now play for some Big 12 teams on scholarship.

I am never surprised just saddened when I see these young men throw away such great opportunities as playing for Texas or any other great university. They don't start doing this when they go to Austin or Norman or Lubbock. They started back in middle school, but their athletic prowess earned them one pass after another.

His "maturity" would be missed? What kind of mature person gets arrested twice in one month for the same crime?

October 7, 2007 4:49 PM | Link to this

The key word here is "former" Longhorn. The media might as well start reporting about every dopehead picked up for pot. This guy is no longer on the team, quit making the team and school look bad by reporting on a loser who isn't part of the program anymore.

we're missing this guy, this year. his maturity would have bode well. besides, many of us were hooking into marijuana, and other drugs, while at UT. Why? To fill a void. people are learning. look at ricky williams. learning about contemplation. contemplation of his oneness with all, and... the Divine.
