At the conclusion of the 1950 Australian Football Carnival held in Brisbane a team was selected from the best performed players. The practice continued after such series until the 1988 Bicentenary Carnival in Adelaide. In 1982, the first AFL team of the year was chosen by the Victorian selectors. With the development of the national competition, the concept was changed slightly and in 1991, the first AFL All-Australian Team was selected.

In 1996, also as part of its centenary celebrations, the AFL launched the Hall of Fame, to pay tribute to the greats of the game. Every year, up to eight distinguished former players, coaches, officials, umpires and media personalities are inducted into the Hall of Fame. There is also a special category for Legends status if they have had a particularly significant positive impact on the game of Australian Football.
