"Scottishness" means that the regiment at some time in its history had a Scottish name and adopted items of Scottish dress and custom. It does not necessarily imply that the regiment ever recruited in Scotland or Scottish expatriate communities, or had a predominant number of members of Scottish ancestry. Within Scotland proper, readers should note that Lowland regiments did not have any particularly Scottish character (e.g. tartans, Pipes & Drums) until the late Victorian era. Units in Scotland proper other than cavalry and infantry are listed only if they included a distinctively Scottish character.

Short-lived Scottish Fencible regiments of the British Army are not listed here. See Fencible Regiments of the British Army 1793-1814 for those of the Napoleonic era. See also the separate Scottish County Index of the Militia and Volunteers of the British Army, which are not included here.

Links lead to a dedicated regimental page.  Flags help to visualise the nationality of regiments, but these are not necessarily intended to represent the flags under which these corps served.
Designates non-Scottish regiments containing a Scottish Company, or Pipes & Drums.
