Another
of the named highways upon which Route 40 was built
is the Harding Highway. It was created in 1923 following
the untimely death of Warren G. Harding.
There is a lot of confusion about where
the Harding Highway ran. Some sources say it ran between
Washington, D.C. and Denver. Other sources indicate
that it ran in northern Ohio and Indiana. Sixty miles
of Route 40 in New Jersey follow the Harding Highway
between May's Landing and Penns Grove. Some people say
the New Jersey section of the Harding Highway continued
west through Wilmington and into southern Pennsylvaniua.
