1949 - Sportswriter Robert Ruark interviews the ailing Bobby Jones and reports that Jones's rare spinal disease will prevent him for golfing again.

1975 - Johnny Miller finishes at 16-under-par 272 to win the Kaiser International Open Invitational by three strokes over Rod Curl at Silverado Country Club in Napa, Calif.

1980 - Mike Sullivan finishes at 15-under-par 269 to win the Southern Open Invitational by five strokes over Dave Eichelberger and Johnny Miller.

1986 - Fred Wadsworth, boosted by a closing 67, finishes at 11-under-par 269 to win the Southern Open Invitational by two strokes over Tim Simpson, George Archer, Jim Thorpe, and John Cook.

1996 - Caroline McMillan (nee Pierce) closes with a 72 and is the only player to finish under par at 2-under 211 in winning the Japan Airlines Big Apple Classic at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, N.Y. Tina Barrett and Karrie Webb finish five strokes behind. The tournament, which was moved to the fall so as not to conflict with the Atlanta Summer Olympics in July, finishes on a Saturday because of NFL football on Sunday.

1997 - Davis Love III cruises to a 21-under-par 267 performance to win the Buick Challenge by four strokes over Stewart Cink.

Bernhard Langer finishes at 21-under-par 267 to ease to the Linde German Masters title by six strokes over Colin Montgomerie.

Hale Irwin, who has a second-round 62, manages a final-round 69 to hold off Dave Eichelberger and win the Vantage Championship. Eichelberger closes with a 62.

Annika Sorenstam finishes at 14-under-par 274 to win the First Union Betsy King Classic by two strokes over Kelly Robbins.


Laura Davies, winner of the1987 U.S. Women's Open and a total of 19 LPGA events, was born in Coventry, England, in 1963.

Ellie Gibson, LPGA member, was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1967.
