GamerDad's Broken Heart

From Linda Bub's GamerDad Signal article, "GamerDad's Broken Heart":

On Saturday September 1st, Andrew Bub - the GamerDad, and my husband - suffered a heart attack. An anterior wall Myocardial Infarction to be exact. On Sunday the 2nd, he had an additional MI and on Labor Day he endured a Quadruple Bypass operation, which saved his life. He's been in the hospital ever since and dearly misses his children, his website, and all of you - his readers. Here's how you can help.

Please take a moment to read Linda's full article, and thank you for supporting GamerDad and his family.

Rayman Raving Rabbids
by GamerDad
April 01, 2007

Rayman jumps, runs, shoots, scores, and flings a cow on this minigame extravaganza. But parents should still beware, look inside to find out why.

Reviewed for Wii.

Cartoon Violence: GamerDad found lots of Bugs Bunny meets SpongeBob style humor and violence.
Comic Mischief: This could mean a lot of things. I think it really just means "more cartoon violence."

Rayman is sort of the French-Canadian version of Nintendo's Mario. He's a weird looking guy mostly consisting of a big yellow nose, athletic shoes, white gloves and . . . no arms or legs. He's a living ray of light, or something, and his usual job is to run, jump and climb through bright and colorful two-three dimensional worlds rescuing cute furry creatures. "Raving Rabbids" takes the series in a new direction in that this time Rayman is the one who needs to be rescued from the furry creatures. The psychotic and sadistic little monsters who've got him are furry white rabbits, fittingly called "rabbids" here. These bad-to-the-bone bunnies imprison our hero and force him into a Roman style arena to compete in 70 minigames.

The games are, for the most part, good. Often they're made even more fun because of the game's singular style and sense of humor. Minigames range from pumping your arms up and down to run down the beach, flinging the remote like a lasso to simulate tossing a cow like an Olympic hammer-throw, or shooting evil bunnies with a plunger-gun. Great fun, slapstick violence, and a wicked sense of humor make this a great party game for the more advanced players in your household.

Lots of slapstick violence and bizarre but never quite disturbing imagery are everywhere, and younger kids might find the gibbering and menacing rabbids upsetting. Really the greatest danger that parents should know about is how frustrating and unforgiving the game can be. Easily frustrated children and adults will find the game fun and hilarious, but also maddening. Maybe playing this game is how those rabbits got to raving in the first place!
