Help with installation

Installing the Highways Agency's Desktop Traffic Headlines application should be quick and easy. We recommend a broadband connection to make maximum use of the service.

You must be using a PC running Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP or Windows Vista. Windows NT Server is not supported. At present, the application is not available for Macintosh computers, however we are currently developing an updated version of the application which will be Macintosh compatible.

The application needs to connect to the internet to retrieve current details of traffic incidents. If you have a firewall configured on your PC it may ask you whether you want to allow the download to proceed. Choose 'yes' if you wish to continue.

Your firewall may also ask you whether you want to let the Desktop Traffic Headlines application communicate with the internet. You must choose 'yes' in order for the service to work.

If you are asked whether to "always allow the application to access the internet" you should choose yes.

There are many different firewalls available and each is configured differently. For detailed information about your own firewall, please refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

Once the application is installed, you can scroll through traffic events by clicking the next and previous buttons. To force the data to update with the most recent available, click the Refresh button.

Clicking the question mark in the top right-hand corner of the application lets you access a number of options. For instance, you can choose to show or hide details of incidents that have been cleared. You can also change the frequency at which the application checks for updates.

If you experience problems with the Desktop Traffic Headlines application, please send a message to our support team who will answer you by email as soon as possible.
