The browser statistic for the current month show a 51% usage for the Firefox browser. Today I’m publishing the browser statistics for the year so far.

Alternatives browser have a usuage of roughly 60%, while the Internet Explorer is only at 40%. Being over-average, this shows the awareness of alternative and secure software products available. The statistics for the Firefox browser show a tendency of running the latest version.

A new version of xpy has been released last week, polishing up code rather than bringing new features. In meanwhile a Vista fork has been released, based on the sourcecode of xpy (version 0.9.8). It was custom built for Microsoft’s latest operating system, but has less features available than xpy (many were no longer necessary). However, Vispa contains some features that will be added to upcoming 0.9.10 version of xpy.

The latest operating system by Microsoft, Windows Vista, is not supported by xpy. When running any Windows XP software on Vista, that is in some way effected by xpy, the settings can still be made. However, if xpy should not able to apply a setting it is not able to produce any damage, as it depends on existing values.
Update: Windows Vista users should have a look at the Vispa project, rather than using xpy!

The most searched queries on this site are about the restoration of setting made with xpy. This is specifically mentioned in the FAQ:
How can I restore the setting(s) made with xpy?
You can run xpy again and then choose the restoration-mode. This detects all previously made changes, so be careful in choosing what settings you want to restore.
The second most searched for query is for translations. Monolingual versions of xpy can be downloaded on SourceForge and BerliOS. The redistributal is at the moment unavailable due to missing translations. You can help and send in translations to be added to the xpy redistributable.
xpy is currently available in Bulgarian, Czech, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian, however not all of the translation match the current version number. New and updated language files are very welcome, please read this guide before uploading translations to SourceForge.

The new version xpy 0.9.7 is now available at SourceForge and BerliOS. Also available is a special build of xpy supporting Ixquick, a search engine that does not record any private data. Whereas the standard build replaces all Microsoft related search technologies in Windows with Google Search, the Special Build uses Ixquick instead.
The majority of visitors on this website does not use Internet Explorer anyway, or to be more precise 46.59% use Firefox and 8.30% use Opera.

The all new xpy 0.9.6 has a feature to disable the notifications of Microsoft’s controversial Windows Genuine Advantage program.
Though the feature could not be fully tested, a lot of research has been done on that and it is supposed to work.

There were quite many support requests about Windows asking for login after reboot. Once setting Disable showing last user, Windows will show this behaviour. I have added this to the xpy FAQ, pointing to Microsoft’s support page where solutions are offered.

So Microsoft has released a preview to
Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) Beta. Personally I use
Firefox and I recommend others to use it aswell. However, in any case the all new
xpy 0.9.5 disables some of the new features of IE7, such as the phishing filter even though it seems to be a good idea.
So why? The phishing filter of IE7 seems to communicate with Microsoft servers and some people might prefer not to do that, for whatever reason. The new xpy version also disables some dialogs and configures the tab settings.

The current version of xpy is available in seven languages. If you feel like xpy should be available in your language, why don’t you think of contributing a translating. All it takes is little knowledge of the Windows operating system and a simple text editor.
I’ve written a short summary of the procedure of translation and uploading the submissions to SourceForge, please go through this before doing anything.
Also note, that there are six more translations available for an older build of xpy. These are Bulgarian, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish. If you speak any of these language, you can download them and complete the missing language strings. Each language file comes with a whatsnew.txt, so you will know what’s left untranslated.
